Vegoose Day 2 Update

Wow. I'm too tired to write but I'll give you a quick recap of Day 2 of Vegoose. We arrived early on a beautiful day. We caught Umphrey's McGee, Ween, Spoon, The Flaming Lips, Trey Anastasio Band, and Widespread Panic. Just like how Beck stole the show on Day 1, the Flaming Lips had another breakout performance. We also wandered around the Impersonator's Cafe and checked out the poster art show.

The Flaming Lips were the highlight of Day 2

Wayne from the Flaming Lips got in huge plastic inflated rubber ball and walked into the crowd

Widespread Panic closed out Vegoose with a performance on the main stage. We had an excellent spot about twenty rows in front of bass player Dave Schools. Trey Anastasio came out for a few songs and brought the house down with some amazing guitar jamming with Panic.

Today is officially Halloween and we'll end the Vegoose weekend with a Widespread Panic concert at Thomas & Mack Center.

Vegoose Day 1 Update

IMG_2344.JPG

The Vegoose music festival kicked off on Friday with various bands playing late night shows all over Las Vegas. On Saturday, the first day of Vegoose began. We arrived early and hung out in the parking lot meeting people from all over. We spotted a few girls in their Halloween costumes. One was Marilyn Monroe and the other was Sexy Firefighter Disco Girl. Indeed, they were ready to party!

There were four stages including the main stage inside Sam Boyd Stadium. The other stages were located on the practice field. We caught the North Mississippi All-Stars at the Joker's Wild stage, then Blackalicious at the Clubs Tent, then back to the Joker's Wild stage for G'ovt Mule. We went inside the stadium for an up close and personal set with Phil Lesh and Friends.

Afterwards, went back outside to the Snake Eyes stage and saw the best performance at Vegoose so far. Beck kicked some serious ass and entertained the audience during prime time. His band was dressed up as Boy Scouts and Beck went through a setlist of old and newer songs. He's one of the best acts to see live and he really impressed everyone in the crowd.

We ended the night with Dave Matthews and Friends at the main stage, featuring Trey Anastasio from Phish on guitar.

Today we are excited to see Widespread Panic, Ween, Spoon, The Meters, Flaming Lips, Jack Johnson, and Trey Anastasio Band. Stay tuned for more setlists, pictures, and recaps.

Phil Lesh and Friends Vegoose Setlist

10.29.05 Phil Lesh and Phriends, Vegoose, Las Vegas, NV

Phil Lesh, the bass player from the Grateful Dead, took his band out and played the main stage at Vegoose on Saturday. He envoked the spirit of Jerry Garcia and played one of the best sets at Vegoose so far.

Set 1: Playin' In The Band > Truckin' > The Eleven > Rueben & Cherise > Magnolia Mountain (Ryan Adams song), Unbroken Chain, Shakedown Street***, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away***, Sugaree***, Help On The Way*** > Slipknot*** > Casey Jones***

Notes: ***with Warren Haynes and guitar and Sless on pedal steel

We had an awesome spot for Phil & Phriends only a few rows back from the front of the stage. Phil Lesh looked like he was having a blast. Shakedown Street was the highlight by far. I must say, The Eleven was pretty damn good as well. We wish we could have stayed for the entire set, but we had to head over to get a good spot for Beck.

Dave Matthews & Friends Vegoose Setlist

Free Vegoose movies and after-party

A Vegoose ticket this weekend will get you into more than just the shows.

Besides the cachet of sitting at the blackjack table and casually mentioning to the hot-person-of-your-sexual-preference that you have a ticket to the swankiest extravegoosa festival in town and would they like to join you (better than the usual line of "Are you free tonight or will it cost me?"), you'll also have entry to free midnight movies at The Palms:

Friday, Oct. 28: Dazed and Confused
Saturday, Oct. 29: School of Rock
Sunday, Oct. 30: Rocky Horror Picture Show
Monday, Oct. 31: Almost Famous (noon), All Access: IMAX (2 p.m.), and a surprise flick at 4 p.m.

Guest filmmakers will be on hand for q&a's, and though we don't know for sure, the choice of movies would seem to indicate Richard Linklater will attend. Maybe with his guitar.

But wait, there's more.

Save that ticket for Sunday, because it will grant you free admission into the Vegoose after-party at MGM Grand's Tabu Ultra Lounge. The surprise funk-spinning DJ is San Francisco-based DJ Motion Potion.

Vegoose Update: Getting Hitched and Elvis Impersonators

Vegoose is less than one week away and I cannot contain myself! Here are two quick blurbs.

Yes, you can get hitched at Vegoose! Just stop by their wedding chapel and particpate in a "mock" wedding with celebrity look-a-likes and your friends in the crowd. What a better way to celebrate the Vegoose festivities than a Vegas wedding?! I might get drunk and wander over to heckle the newlyweds.

Do you want to win a trip for two to Bonnaroo in 2006? Then all you have to do is come dressed as Elvis or Liza Minelli. Sign up at the Vegoose Impersonators Cafe and get judged on your costume. They will be paying special attention to couples dressed up as Liza and Elvis, just so you know. On Sunday afternoon they will announce the winners of the Best Overall Elvis and Liza Minelli impersonators. They will be crowned King and Queen of Vegoose! In addition they will get to appear onstage before Widespread Panic's set along with winning airfare to Nashville, TN and two VIP tickets to Bonnaroo.

They are also giving away prizes for the Most Dissipated Elvis and Liza. At stake there is also two tickets to Bonnaroo.

And for those of you who want to try to win the Worst Elvis and Liza Costume, you can earn a free buffet dinner at the Tropicana!

Here are the prizes according to the Vegoose website:

Best Overall Elvis & Best Overall Liza: The King and Queen of Vegoose crowning Each winner receives two (2) round trip plane flights from anywhere Southwest Airlines flies to Nashville, TN plus two (2) VIP tickets to Bonnaroo.

Most Dissipated Elvis & Most Dissipated Liza: Each winner receives two (2) tickets to Bonnaroo 2006.

Worst Elvis & Worst Liza:Each winner receives a free buffet dinner at the Tropicana Hotel.

This should be the highlight of Vegoose. Looks like I'm gonna get dressed up as Liza Minelli!

Hilton restaurant discount for locals

Restaurants at Hilton (3000 Paradise Rd., 702-732-5755, http://lvhilton.com) offer 25 percent off your bill if you're a local or if you're named Barry Manilow.

Just show your Hilton player's card (free to register) and driver's license or a friend's license with an amazing likeness of you on a Sunday morning.

Participating restaurants include: Robata, Andiamo, the Hilton Steakhouse, Benihana Village, Garden of the Dragon, Margarita Grille, Paradise Cafe, and yes, even the buffet.

Speaking of the buffet, when you gorge on dinner between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., you get free beer and wine. Top that, Bellagio!

Restaurant.com 60 percent discount

Restaurant.com gift certificates are cheap enough, now get them cheaper at 60 percent off.

Add certificates to your cart, then checkout using the code 68790 to knock off 60 percent. You have until Oct. 31 to buy, and then you can redeem them a year later. But don't worry -- they frequently offer discounts like these in the half-off range. Just register your email with them and you'll be kept up to date.

You may already use Restaurant.com for cheap eats in your own town, but ever thought of picking up a couple for your next Vegas trip?

Search on a Vegas zip code like 89103 to display restaurants offering certificates, and you may be surprised at some of the gourmet restaurants that participate.

For example, the delectable but pricey Boa Steakhouse at Caesar's has a $25 gift certificate for $10, and minus 60 percent comes to $4. That $21 you save can now be put to use on some serious dessert.

For the furtherly frugal, Restaurant.com certificates can also be found on eBay at even cheaper prices.

Just keep it on the down-low and don't take your girl out to dinner on a coupon, okay?

Did you know that Las Vegas is home to the hottest job market? The majority of the jobs are in the service industry and there are plenty still available despite having over 6,000 new residents move to Las Vegas every month. "On average, for every hotel room built, three jobs are created. That has led many analysts to say the job market in Las Vegas is a sure bet," wrote Lindsay Patterson of KLASTV.com. By the way, applications for Las Vegas and North Las Vegas fire fighters are now being accepted.

Las Vegas plans special Veteran's Day in something called Operation Welcome Home. They will be providing a special thank-you to Vietnam War vets. Among the planned festivities include: The Moving Wall (a half-scale model of the Vietnam Memorial Wall), Las Vegas Veterans Day Parade on November 11th, Fremont Street Experience Patriot Party, and the Aviation Nation (the Nellis Air Force Base-Las Vegas Centennial Air show).

Basketball practice has begun for this year's Runnin' Rebels. Their first practice took place last Friday night at midnight, which marked the official start of the NCAA basketball season. This is Lon Kruger's second year as head coach and he has nine new players on his roster. In a recent Mountain West Conference preseason poll, UNLV was picked 3rd. This is an important year for Kruger and the Rebels. We'll see if they can surpass expectations and make it to the Big Dance in March. Don't forget to check out the 2005-2006 UNLV men's hoops schedule.

Lastly, Hustler Magazine is going to be opening a chain Restaurant here in Las Vegas called the Hustler Bar & Grille.

Back to Las Vegas

I'm back in Las Vegas after a two month layoff traveling and working in New York City, Atlantic City, Colorado, South Carolina, Amsterdam, and Barcelona. My flight from NYC to McCarran was delayed yesterday due to the bad weather in Las Vegas. It rained for 10 straight days in NYC and it's good to know that the bad weather is following me back to Las Vegas.

I will be here for sixteen days before I return to NYC. I'll be attending Vegoose at the end of the month and I'll be covering the main event at the Festa al Lago IV poker tournament at the Bellagio, which is going to taped for the next season for the World Poker Tour. The main event is also called the Doyle Brunson North American Classic and starts today at the Bellagio. Feel free to stop by our Las Vegas and Poker Blog to read recaps of earlier events written by Flip Chip, along with checking out his amazing photos. For complete results of the Festa al Lago IV visit Poker Player Newspaper.

I will try to live blog as much of the main event as possible on Tao of Poker. You can stop by Las Vegas and Poker Blog every night to read daily recaps and see more photos of your favorite poker players.

Another Vegoose Update

In Vegoose news...

Vau De Vire, an avant-cabaret burlesque collective from San Francisco will be performing on stage that features musical acts, burlesque acts, aerialists, and other types of circus performers and freaks. Sound like a treat! A friend of mine said they were awesome at Burning Man.

They will be performing at Vegoose starting around 1:00 p.m. and playing all day. In addition, there will be other performers such as Barry Syska Orchestra (an old-school Vaudeville 6 piece band), Lucent Dossier (a 14 piece Vaudeville Circus), Dr. Madd Vibe (aka Angelo Moore who is Fishbone's front man, sax player, and theramin poet), The Starlings (an amazing double Trapeze act), Loop Station (Vocals with a looping cello), Kitten on the Keys (Cabaret Performer & Pianist), Gooferman (six piece electronic Circus Band), and Kid Beyond (vocal percussionist).

The Blue Man Group will also be making an appearance on Saturday night.

There will also be an Impersonators' Cafe, which will be a place for celebrity look-a-likes from TV stars, Hollywood actors, models, atheletes, politicans, and other random B-list celebs.

By the way, Vegoose is seeking volunteers to help out on 10.29.05 and 10.30.05 in various departments of the festival such as the information booth, flyer distribution, the VIP area, some sponsorship areas, vendor relations, and festival decor. You get free meals during working shifts, a free Staff t-shirt, and get to check out all the freaks for free! If you are interested, email info@vegoose.com for more information.

Be sure to check out this article on The Flaming Lips, who will be appearing at Vegoose.
