A trip to Las Vegas is not complete without a trip to the buffet. Over the past few years I picked up a few tips which has made my buffet experience more enjoyable.
1. If you go during peak hours, expect to wait in line. The cheaper the buffet, the more crowded it is. The better the buffet, the more crowded it is. If you try to go during off-peak hours, you might miss out on some of the daily specials or eat some of the food that's not as fresh. If you know that the lunch buffet starts at 11:00am, then show up a few minutes earlier and secure your place in line.
2. Make sure you're hungry! In order to get the most bang for your buck, you should head to the buffet when you are the most hungry that way you can eat more. Obviously the more you eat, the better deal you get on the buffet.
3. Avoid pastas, breads, and other carbs. I love Italian food and bread. But those items tend to fill you up faster. These days, I take smaller portions of pasta and potatoes and try to leave room for higher end items plus the desserts. I also avoid the pizza. You can eat pizza anytime.
4. Try the specials. Usually a buffet has a special meal for that day. Sometimes it can be Kobe beef or Alaskan crab. Take advantage of those specialty items since they are the most expensive and are not always featured. That's why I avoid the common items like pizza and mashed potatoes. Those are comfort foods, but you won't maximize your buffet dollars by eating those items. However, if you fill your plate with sushi, various carving station items, shrimp and other seafood specials... then you can get more bang for your buck.
5. Leave room for dessert! I usually make three trips to the buffet. My second trip is called "half-time" and head right for the dessert bar. Some buffets have gelato or other fine pastries. Since I eat dessert in the middle of my buffet, I always have room.
6. Don't forget to tip your drink server. I tip $1 per person. If the service is excellent or you have a large group, feel free to add more.
That's it for now. I'll be back with more buffet tips in the future.
