Ring in 2008 in Las Vegas

2008 New Years Eve
Las Vegas Strip is cleared of vehicles before the hundreds of thousands of New Year's Eve revelers take the street

Over 300,000 additional people are expected to be in town tonight to line the Las Vegas Strip tonight.

New Year's Eve is the largest party of the year here, bigger than July 4th, with seven hotel-casinos launching and synching 30,000 fireworks from their rooftops. Like the past few years, Fireworks by Grucci is back with pyrotechnics from New York (they've staged fireworks shows at the Statue of Liberty and in Times Square) under the theme "The Best is Yet to Come."

The seven casinos hosting fireworks are Circus Circus, Stratosphere, Flamingo, Venetian (whose Palazzo is now open), Planet Hollywood, MGM Grand, and Treasure Island. Downtown Las Vegas will simulcast the fireworks on their neon canopy on Fremont Street, and will also have a concert by the Doobie Brothers and The Bangles (tickets to the concert are $60).

Four miles of Las Vegas Blvd. will be closed, in addition to side streets and ramps from I-15 to the Strip. Get to where you're going early, and plan on staying into the wee hours of 2008. Streets will be closed depending on traffic and crowd control, but somewhere between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Las Vegas Blvd. will not reopen until 4 a.m. at the earliest.

For the only time of the year, glass bottles and metal cans are prohibited on the Strip and downtown between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Those found holding could be fined and charged with a misdemeanor.

Also, children under 18 years old will not be allowed on the Strip from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. unless with a parent or legal guardian.

Happy 2008!

Last-minute New Year's Eve clubs in Las Vegas

Looking for some last-minute club-hopping on New Year's Eve?

Here are some prices for VIP entry at The Light Group properties, which seemingly owns most of the clubs and lounges in town:

The Bank (debuting at Bellagio): $250
JET (at Mirage): $200 plus hosted bar
Diablo's Cantina (at Monte Carlo): $75
FIX (at Bellagio): $325 plus four-course meal and champagne
Stack (at Mirage): $125 plus four-course meal and champagne
Caramel (at Bellagio): $75

And after you've "accidentally" spent all your clubbing dollars on blackjack, the cheapest place is:

Mist (at Treasure Island): $30

Packages are available which can get you food, drinks, and clubs altogether. The Bellagio package is $495 which includes Fix, Caramel, and VIP admission to The Bank. The Mirage package is $295, which includes Stack and VIP admission to JET.

To reserve, call (702) 693-8300.

Rio Hosts Motorcycle Jump Record for New Year's Eve

Update: Robbie Maddison set a new world record distance for motorcycle jumps. Check out the video below, more details available here.

Ramp for the Robbie Maddison attempt on the world record for longest motorcycle jump

Australian motorcycle daredevil Robbie Maddison will attempt to fly his Honda motorcycle more than 300 feet to claim the record for the longest motorcycle jump ever. It all takes place on New Year's Eve at 11:00 pm ET, 8:00 pm local Vegas time. The show takes place from the overflow parking lot at the Rio Resort in Las Vegas. A huge dirt ramp has been constructed for the landing and ringside bleacher seating is available for a $12 admission ticket. The event will be broadcast live on ESPN TV as part of their New Year's Eve Extravaganza. Maddison has dedicated the stunt to the recently passed Evil Knievel. The attempt is part of the Red Bull Energy Drink - USA - New Year's Eve - The Experiment at the Rio All Suite Resort.

A second stunt scheduled for the show has been cancelled. Orange County California daredevil driver Rhys Millen was injured during practice for his truck backflip stunt. During his third practice run the truck landed on it's top on concrete injuring Millen's back and neck. The first two flips into a cardboard pit were successful. No word if ESPN will telecast the accident.

Former O.C. Star, Mischa Barton, Joins Sin City Celebrity Host "Busted Lush" Club

Actress Mischa Barton joins the likes of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan as party hosts for Las Vegas events who missed those don't drink and drive ads, forgot to bring the chauffeur, and can't be bothered with a simple driving license. Barton was scheduled to be co-hosting the grand opening of the new "Cat House" club at the Luxor hotel Saturday night. Barton is out of police custody following her arrest early Thursday morning in West Hollywood for DUI, possession of illegal narcotics, and driving without a valid license.

MGM Grand Las Vegas
MGM Grand Las Vegas - Site of the Jan. 18-20 "Hannah Montana" Concert

Hannah Montana is so popular that Lindsay Lohan recently called in to a local Las Vegas radio station to win tickets for a friend of hers.

Miley Cyrus, the 15-year-old daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus and star of "Hannah Montana" has sold out 55 shows and has shown no signs of stopping.

She performs two shows in Vegas on January 18 (7 p.m.), January 19 (4 p.m.) and January 20 (4 p.m.) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Alas, we didn't have any luck finding tickets off Ticketmaster, and scalpers have been known to sell tickets to her "Best of Both Worlds Tour" for 4 to 5 times face value.

We did, however, find tickets available on eBay for $189 for a pair. Failing that, you could try making an offer to Lindsay Lohan.

[Editor's Note: You might double check TicketMaster for tickets.]

The Huntington Beach Bad Boy will be joined with girlfriend Jenna Jameson to preview NBC's latest "The Apprentice" with celebrities.

This seventh edition of the Donald Trump reality show will feature Ortiz and 13 other celebrities including Gene Simmons, Stephen Baldwin, Carol Alt, Marilu Henner, Nadia Comaneci, Vincent Pastore ("Big Pussy" on "The Sopranos"), Lennox Lewis, and Omarosa (yep, that Omarosa, who became famous from season 1).

The winner of "Celebrity Apprentice" will receive $250,000 to donate to the charity of their choice.

It premieres Jan. 3.

Chuck Liddell sets to reclaim title starting with Wanderlei Silva

Chuck Liddell's clubbing ways weren't criticized when he was winning, but now that he's had back-to-back defeats (Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 71 and Keith Jardine at UFC 76) , fans have been quick to put him down for the very thing that made him such a success in the first place.

At UFC 79: Nemesis, the Iceman has another shot in this Saturday's highly anticipated bout against Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

This time, Liddell's partying has been low-key (or hasn't been covered as much) and he's been seen having more discipline and focus.

Because a third loss in a row for the 38-year-old mixed martial arts fighter might pull him out of The Octagon for good.

Tickets up to $1,000 are sold out on Ticketmaster, but can be seen live on Pay Per View Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. PT or on Bravo a day after.

Fergie and Duahamel engaged

The Duchess gets her Duke?

Josh Duhamel, star of NBC series "Las Vegas," and Black Eyed Peas singer-gone-solo Fergie (Stacy Ferguson) met on the set of the show when she guest starred in September 2004.

Since then, they've been a tabloid item and have a house together. Recently, Fergie mentioned she was in no hurry to get married because they were "practically married, anyway." A diamond ring on a certain finger seemed to indicate otherwise, but was denied it had anything to do with engaging.

Now it's been confirmed that they're officially engaged, in what could be the first of a series of Christmas celebrity engagements (though it hasn't been confirmed Duhamel popped the question on Dec. 25).

No wedding date has been set yet.

Beer, well, mixed, wine, champagne, and specialty drinks are all included. Bypass the no-shot rule by ordering the liquor straight with soda on the side.

Egypt to copyright pyramids?

Luxor Las Vegas
Luxor Las Vegas

According to the BBC, Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities will be behind a new copyright law that will force payment of royalties to whomever uses copies of its famous pyramids.

Know of any pyramids in our fine neon city?

Apparently, because Luxor (the casino) is not an exact replica of the Egyptian monument, the MGM Mirage (which owns Luxor) would be exempt from the new law.

It not being an exact replica is because inside does not imitate a traditional pyramid. Could someone have tipped off MGM Mirage or could they have been that prescient to know about this upcoming law? Just a few months ago, a complete overhaul of the Luxor interior was begun to get rid of its Egyptian theme.

The law is being passed to bring in much-needed funds for upkeep of Egypt's monuments.

Driving around Las Vegas last night revealed a Christmas Eve filled with even more colors than the usual neon mix. Every street seemed to be ablaze with holiday lights. We checked out the Ethyl M's botanical gardens light display. Every holiday season the Ethyl's candy factory's cactus garden turns into a fantasy land filled with a rainbow of colors from the hundreds of thousands of lights.

The camera has a hard time capturing and reproducing the scenes of electric art; so check out the photos and fill in with your imagination for some views of the hardy desert dwellers wearing luminous holiday wraps. The light display is free and open to the public from sunset to 10:30 pm nightly through the holidays. It's located at Mountain Vista and Sunset in Henderson.

Las Vegas Christmas Past Nine's List

Holiday Flower Bear at Bellagio Conservatory • 2006

In the spirit of the season we offer a 'Nine's List" originally published in December, 2004. Flipchip photo above taken at last year's holiday Conservatory at the Bellagio. Las Vegas makes it easy to forget most anything, even the big Christmas holiday so for those that are new to Las Vegas during the holidays here's our top nine ways to know it's Christmas in Las Vegas...

Pamela Anderson

9. Instead of an olive your martini has a sugar plum.
8. All the food at the Circus Circus buffet is red or green...oops sorry, that's normal.
7. Big Red sleigh parked in valet.
6. Frosty the Snowman hitting on the cocktail girls.
5. Downtown Vegas decorated as giant lump of coal.
4. Hotel security dressed as nutcrackers (except the Paris, they always dress that way).
3. Elves playing slots.
2. Coffee shop daily special...roasted reindeer.
1. Santa playing the 'big game' in Bobby's Room!

Local hits royal flush for $20,000 at Albertson's

photos by flipchip • lasvegasvegas.com

Albertsons Market Las Vegas

VegasRex was in the right place at the right time... if only he were playing the right game.

VegasRex was at a local Albertson's (we're guessing the one on E. Trop), when a lucky new local hit a royal flush for $20,000 on a $5 video poker machine (Double Double Bonus).

Wait, $5? We've never seen the multi-denom up that high (not to mention we've never seen a royal hit at any supermarket), but then again our store of choice is Smith's. Most slot players we've seen in the special slot areas at the front of the stores play quarters, with their plastic bags of groceries sitting next to them while they enjoy free sodas and candies.

We may have to switch stores, though. Maybe Albertson's is the new high-limit area of supermarket video poker.

Las Vegas Film Critics Society announce 2007 Sierra winners

The Las Vegas Film Critics Society has announced their annual Sierra awards for the best films this year.

Taking the top spot is the Coen Bros.' No Country for Old Men, which won Best Picture, along with the Coens for Best Director.

Best Actor is Daniel Day-Lewis in Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood.

Both films are widely predicted to go up against each other at the Academy Awards.

Ellen Page won Best Actress for playing a 16-year-old pregnant girl (a part that should've gone to Jamie-Lynn Spears) in Juno. Diablo Cody, the stripper-turned-screenwriter, wrote the screenplay and also won for Best Screenplay.

Best Supporting Actor is Javier Bardem, playing the oxygen tank killer with a penchant for making his victims decide their fate on the toss of a coin in No Country for Old Men.

Best Supporting Actress is Cate Blanchett, who we think can do no wrong even when playing Bob Dylan in I'm Not There.

The LVFCS's top films of 2007 are:

No Country for Old Men
Sweeney Todd
3:10 to Yuma
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Zodiac
Into the Wild
Juno
Eastern Promises
The Lookout
Sunshine

More awards can be found at the Las Vegas Film Critics Society website.

Happy 2nd Birthday, South Point

southpointanniv.jpg

Happy 2nd Birthday to South Point!

Beginning at 2 p.m. today and running through 10 p.m., there will be free cake and champagne at the Silverado and Del Mar Lounge.

All points will also be doubled all day (maybe on their third birthday we'll get 3x).

Technically, South Point opened (as South Coast) on Dec. 22, 2005 and last year celebrated their first birthday on Jan. 24 of this year, but we won't hold that against them. Wednesdays aren't as busy as weekends, and casinos often fudge birthday celebrations to draw in as many people as possible.

Third time wedding the charm for Britney?

We were skeptical when Star Magazine reported it last week, but who are we to stray away from Las Vegas gossip, especially when it comes to Britney?

Star said that much-media-embattered Britney Spears is planning to elope in Las Vegas to her personal assistant Sam Lutfi.

We still doubt this, but many U.K. news rags have picked up on the story as legitimate, saying that Spears has already informed lawyers about her intention and does not want to sign a prenup.

This would mark wedding #3, and wedding #2 in Las Vegas, when she married childhood sweetheart Jason Alexander and then anulled a couple days later.

Spears' previous husband is Kevin Federline, who did sign a prenup, who's receiving $15,000 per month in child support and $20,000 in alimony, and who's in a bitter custody battle over their two kids.

In other Spears family news, her 16-year-old sister Jamie-Lyn Spears has announced she's pregnant, and the mother of both Spears kids, Lynne Spears, has had her book about parenting delayed indefinitely.

Pamela Anderson has second thoughts

Pamela Anderson

And just as fast as the divorce was filed, she was just as fast taking it back.

Today, Pamela Anderson listed on her website that she and husband Rick Salomon are reconciling, after she filed for divorce on Friday citing irreconcilable differences over the two months they were married.

Just another topsy-turvy day in celebdom, apparently.

But that'll surely teach Salomon not to leave the toilet seat up.

Pamela Anderson divorces Rick Salomon

We guess it just wasn't meant to be. Pamela Anderson, who just ended her stint as magician's assistant in Hans Klok's "The Beauty of Magic" at Planet Hollywood, has also just ended her marriage.

After the 7 p.m. show in early October, she wed Rick Salomon and then went onstage for the 10 p.m. show to make the announcement.

Now, two months later on Dec. 13, she's quietly filed for divorce.

If we were the skeptical type, the coincidence of both ending simultaneously has publicity written all over it (when the show began, she'd intimated she was intimate with Klok), but we'd never hint at something as preposterous as that.

Celine Dion performs final show, simulcasts live in 200 theaters

celinedionfinal.jpg

Celine Dion's final bow at Caesars Palace was last night, but if you live in one of 200 cities, you can see a live performance of that show.

A New Day will be simulcast in 200 movie theaters across the country Dec. 17. In Las Vegas, it plays at 7:30 p.m. at the Regal Village Square (at Sahara). Check your local listings or Fandango to see if it's playing near you.

A double-disc DVD of A New Day: Live in Las Vegas hit stores Dec. 11, comprising a whopping 5 hours commemorating her show and broadcasting its entire 90 minutes and 18 songs edited from performances Jan. 17-21, 2007.

Since March 2003, Dion's show had 717 performances in front of over 3 million people and made about $400 million for Harrah's. Her then-unheard of contract of $100 million later seemed like a bargain.

She begins a world tour next year in February 2008, performing and promoting her new album Taking Chances in different cities across five continents through January 2009.

Beginning in February, Bette Midler will replace Dion at Caesars Palace with a show called The Showgirl Must Go On.
