MGM Mirage to debut Fine Art Program with CityCenter
You can't say it's not for lack of trying.
Even as Art with a capital 'A' slowly disappears from the Las Vegas culture scene (with two big hits being the removal of Wynn's art gallery and the Guggenheim at The Venetian because of low attendance).
MGM Mirage has lofty plans with their CityCenter (now upgraded to $9 billion because of rising construction costs) with a Fine Art Program that will open with the bulk of the project in the fall of 2009.
The $40 million program will be scattered throughout CityCenter inside and out in the form of paintings and sculptures, as well as large-scale installations.
Artists include Maya Lin, Jenny Holzer, Nancy Rubins, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Frank Stella, Henry Moore, and Richard Long. Existing and commissioned art will be specific to its chosen location.
Perhaps experiencing art outside of the dusty museum and into people's homes, work, and casino (natch) is where we're headed.
Just don't try to remove that $100,000 painting from the wall; it'll probably be nailed down.
