NBC to produce new Las Vegas poker TV series

NBC Heads-Up Poker
NBC produces the popular National Heads-Up Poker Championship

Dadgummit, this was our idea years ago. If only we had a few million to invest.

NBC will produce a new Las Vegas poker series that pits poker professionals against poker amateurs.

The same production company behind NBC's "Poker After Dark" created "Face the Ace" and is slated to begin Aug. 1.

Our idea was to have a poker pro play against a table full of amateurs in a regular low-limit cash game in Las Vegas. Could a pro survive the volatility of a regular game?

We suspect the new show will be at higher stakes.

Slot manufacturers IGT and Bally battle in court

Behind the scenes of slot machines are numerous patents that prevent competitors from using (profiting on) each other's ideas.

Things like the wheel, for example.

The largest slot machine manufacturer, International Game Technology, has long held a patent on using a wheel in a gaming device. It's most familiar in the Wheel of Fortune slot machine, where players get to spin a wheel for a credit award whenever a symbol lands in their game.

Bally Technologies has been in a heated court battle against IGT, trying to invalidate some of their patents. Namely the wheel, which Bally was successful in dismissing. (Bally had a vested interest, because they use a wheel of their own in their games, though to get around the patent, instead of the wheel itself spinning, the ball or arrow spun.) As a result, expect to see more slot machines with wheels in the future.

IGT struck back with a series of patents that Bally was infringing on, involving networked gaming and bonusing. This time the federal court ruled in favor of IGT, upholding the patents.

For years casinos have been talking about networking slot machines. Now you know why it's taking so long -- the technology is being held up in court.

Las Vegas currently has no confirmed cases of swine flu

Nevada was listed on the CDC website as having a single confirmed case of swine flu. The infected individual is a two-year-old girl in the Reno area of Northern Nevada. State health officials urged Nevada lawmakers to not panic saying the state is well prepared to handle the virus outbreak.

No cases of swine flu have been reported in Las Vegas to date although health officials believe it's only a matter of time, especially if the threat worsens.

Las Vegas Sands may be selling casino in Macau

Las Vegas Sands owns the Palazzo on the Las Vegas Strip

Hoping to stave off bankruptcy, Las Vegas Sands is rumored to be mulling over a sale of the Sands Macao, its first casino in Macau in 2004.

They would still run the casino, but the building would be sold for $1.3 billion. It originally was built for $240 million and was entirely paid off within 1 year.

The rumor was spread by the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post.

LV Sands also owns The Venetian and Four Seasons in Macau, along with The Venetian and Palazzo in Las Vegas.

The company, which declined comment on the sale, closed today at $6.91 from a 52-week high of $77 (and before then, a high of $122).

New York New York offers $300 flight credit to return

New York New York Las Vegas
New York New York on the Las Vegas Strip

As Las Vegas casinos figure out more and more different and creative ways to bring back players, here's one that brings back a player twice during the spring/summer while peeking into the world of comps.

New York New York has an offer for a return airfare credit of $300 if you play 5,000 points in slots ($5000 playthrough) or $50 bet in table games for at least 5 hours.

You must be a guest when you do the offer, and on your return trip you must again stay at New York New York through August for at least 2 nights. When you return and check-in, you'll receive a voucher for $300.

In slots at an average 90 percent return, your expected loss is $500, so this offer -- particularly if you were planning two trips to Las Vegas between now and August -- seems pretty decent.

After previous seasons in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami Beach, Chicago, and New York, season 6 of "Top Chef" has already begun shooting in Las Vegas.

Our favorite new casino, M Resort, is rumored to be host to our favorite chef reality TV program.

"Top Chef" pits chefs against each other, judged by professional chefs and luminaries in the food and beverage industry.

M Resort is located about 14 miles south of the Las Vegas Strip, on St. Rose Parkway near I-15.

Fontainebleau sues banks for $3 billion

Fountainebleau Las Vegas
Fountainebleau during early construction

By all accounts, Fontainebleau looked golden.

Located north on the Las Vegas Strip (below Sahara), the highly anticipated resort casino had all its funding in place with no major snafus and was expected to open on time later this year.

But now the casino with almost 4,000 rooms and 100,000 square feet of gaming space is in danger of being halted because its banks have pulled out of their agreement to lend them a previously agreed upon $800 million for remaining construction.

The lenders claim they terminated their agreement because Fontainebleau defaulted on the loan.

Fontainebleau says they didn't default, and slapped a $3 billion lawsuit (the cost of Fontainebleau) against the banks.

In this economic climate, more pressure is on banks to scrutinize loans to an industry that is currently hurting. But losing a lawsuit could prove even more detrimental.

WSOP to again delay final table

2008 WSOP Final Table
2008 WSOP Final Table was first to be held in November

This year's 40th anniversary World Series of Poker final table will once again be delayed.

We're a fan of poker as a stamina sport, but apparently Harrah's (which owns WSOP) crunched the numbers and found delaying profitable, so we have it again.

The $10,000-buy-in main event will also again run through the July 4th holiday, which in Las Vegas, isn't that big (in fact, there are barely any fireworks, at least not as many as New Year's Eve).

The WSOP main event starts July 3 with multiple first and second days, then dwindles to the final table on July 15.

Then ESPN will swarm the 9 remaining players (maybe they'll do a reality show this time) as they cover what they're up to in the months-long intermission.

The players will regroup on Nov. 7, and play will continue until there's one winner.

Las Vegas Sun wins Pulitzer Prize

CityCenter downtown Las Vegas
Six construction related deaths at the CityCenter project and no deaths in the last eleven months, thanks to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Alexandra Berzon of the Las Vegas Sun

Your very own Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper can be found at your doorstep.

Yesterday, the Las Vegas Sun was presented the esteemed award for Public Service.

Last year, the Sun ran a series of over 50 articles about the number of construction worker deaths along the Las Vegas Strip, including the MGM Mirage CityCenter site.

Specifically, the Pulitzer panel pointed out "courageous reporting" by staff writer Alexandra Berzon "for the exposure of the high death rate among construction workers on the Las Vegas Strip amid lax enforcement of regulations, leading to changes in policy and improved safety conditions."

Her controversial writing caused an uproar when she reported that construction workers were "dying at a rate of one every six weeks in the $32 billion building boom on the Las Vegas Strip."

Runner-up to the Sun was The New York Times, with its coverage of the economic meltdown.

Berzon, 29, began with the Sun in 2007. It's her first staff writer position with a newspaper.

Berzon was in court when the news came. She was covering a lawsuit about safety conditions.

Las Vegas Peepshow courting Lindsay Lohan

peepshow.jpg

The new show Peepshow at Planet Hollywood is rumored to be courting Lindsay Lohan to take over the role of Bo Peep, currently played by Kelly Monaco.

The show first made headlines when Mel B. signed on for a reported $1 million payday.

Getting Lohan may surpass that.

In previews since the end of March, Peepshow had its opening this past weekend, with Lohan in attendance. In fact, the producers flew her out on their private jet.

We're actually looking forward to seeing the show, and thankful that it's not another Cirque du Soleil.

Tickets range from $65-$100 and shows are Sunday-Tuesday at 8 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m., and Thursday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

May 8 is the premiere date of the new Star Trek reboot movie through the eyes of J.J. Abrams.

That date was also anticipated as the reboot to The Star Trek Experience through Neonopolis owner Rohit Joshi.

While The Star Trek Experience will still be coming to downtown Las Vegas to give a boost to the mostly vacant Neonopolis, it won't be simultaneous with the movie premiere.

CBS, which owns the license to Star Trek and its incarnations, has put the kibosh on having the show even remotely taking away business from the movie.

When the show does open (possibly later in May or summer), it will be an enhanced version of the long-running show that ran at the Las Vegas Hilton. It will include an IMAX 4D movie, museum, bar, restaurant, and gift shop. And all for less than $25 per ticket.

Free room at Wynn Las Vegas with purchase of 2 tickets to Le Reve

Le Reve at the Wynn Las Vegas

Wynn Las Vegas has a luxurious Splash Into Summer offer, where they're giving away a night in their hotel if you buy 2 premium tickets to Le Reve.

Tickets must be purchased through Ticketmaster with all their assorted fees (figure on adding about $13 extra per ticket) at this link and then hotel must be booked at 1-866-770-7410 with Ticketmaster verification code.

Up to 8 tickets can be purchased (which means 4 free room nights).

Offer is good for tickets/rooms through June 15. Offer is not good May 1-2 and May 15-17.

Available ticket prices are $137.50 and $196.90 (VIP Indulgence).

The VIP Indulgence package includes upgraded seats, a bottle of Perrier-Jouet Champagne plus bottle service, chocolate-covered strawberries, and a Privilege Access Pass good as a line pass at dining outlets at Wynn Las Vegas.

Not a bad deal, though we noticed a 10 percent upcharge on the Ticketmaster seats and you still will need to pay taxes on the value of the hotel room. A regular hotel room at Wynn goes for $359 per night and the hotel tax is 9 percent, so figure on paying about $33.

PartyGaming exec joins Harrah's online

Harrah's Las Vegas

After two years of negotiations, PartyGaming (owner of PartyPoker) agreed to pay the United States $105 million and admitted that operating its gaming sites within the U.S. was illegal.

In exchange, Party will not be prosecuted in any way.

If the U.S. government or individual states ever regulates online gaming, this positions Party at the forefront, having cleaned its slate of any wrongdoing.

And now, we hear that Mitch Garber, former chief executive of PartyGaming, has been snatched up by Harrah's to run an online division.

What exactly that online division is, is unknown, but we've long suspected the big casino conglomerates (including MGM Mirage) of being interested in online gaming and being proponents of getting it legalized in the U.S.

Now with the economy and brick and mortar casino profits down, online revenue is looking ever attractive.

Harrah's owns the World Series of Poker. An online poker site with the WSOP brand, run by a former PartyPoker exec, would do very well indeed.

The 11th annual CineVegas film festival is shaping up to be a good one.

We go to this festival every year at Brenden Theatres (at the Palms) and are impressed by the quality of films chosen (mostly of the independent variety that may not have distributors) and the filmmakers present for Q&As.

This year, CineVegas will hold world premieres of eight films, including its opening night comedy of Hue Rhodes' Saint John of Las Vegas, loosely based Dante's Inferno (yes, that Dante) and starring Steve Buscemi and Sarah Silverman. Saint Joan, about an ex-gambler lured back to the sins of Las Vegas as he investigates a stripper owed $200,000 in lapdances.

The movie kicks off the festival June 10 at Planet Hollywood.

View the trailer at this link and enter a contest to win all-access passes to the entire festival.

Regular passes don't go on sale until April 15, but if you purchase today or tomorrow, you'll receive 10 percent off. Passes range from students ($100) to locals ($150) to all-access ($500).

M Resort and Casino steals locals from Station, Boyd

M Resort Las Vegas
The M's blimp often seen floating above Boyd Gaming and Station Casinos properties played Pied Piper as it led customers to the far south M Resort

Some friends were in town for Easter weekend, so we took them to the new M Resort way down south of Las Vegas Blvd. (so far south -- about 14 miles from the Strip -- that it's in Henderson and actually on St. Rose Pkwy.).

M is the latest billion-dollar casino to enter Las Vegas but is independent and caters to locals.

Station and Boyd have something to worry about. Despite the economy, M was completely packed, with all restaurants at capacity and long lines to the buffet (which requires purchasing a ticket with a seating time before queuing up).

And what of the offers? M is strategically eschewing standard discounts, buy 1 get 1, etc. that their local counterparts are offering. Instead, they're saying you want to come to us for us and not our freebies. (Although this month they're offering 2x points every day.)

It of course helps that M just opened last month and is still drawing in newcomers heading into Vegas on the I-15 or locals who want to see a casino done right. A year from now after the newlywed period, we expect to see similar discounts.

Long a staple of Native American casinos, M is the first Las Vegas casino to offer a complimentary beverage station. Anyone can fill up on a variety of sodas and nonalcoholic drinks and drink to their heart's content. Saves us a couple bucks when we take the drink into a restaurant, however gauche that may be.

How does its player's club stack up to others in town? Very nicely. Every $333 playthrough in slots and non-optimum play video poker (normally vp is 2x) earns $1 that can be used as freeplay or comps or cashback. Regular slot clubs don't comp $1 until $1000 of coin-in.

Other unique niceties include a pharmacy (insurance co-pays) and an on-site gas station and car wash, all of which can be paid for by points.

We didn't have the patience to stand in the long line to the well-reviewed Studio B buffet, but all slot club members receive $2 off.

We'll report back if we receive any free offers from our slot play session of a few hours. We're jonesing to check out their hotel rooms.

Nevada prostitution tax voted down in Senate

Sen. Bob Coffin had hoped to ease Nevada's state budget by taxing patrons $5 for services by a prostitute in the approximately 30 legalized brothels in the state.

At 3 for and 4 against, the measure was perhaps the closest a prostitution tax has come to passing. It would have been temporary for only the next two years at an estimated $8 million.

Unfortunately, in addition to helping the state budget, the money would have also gone to assisting brothel workers by providing training and rehabilitation.

Computer upgrade downs all of Boyd casinos

As we write this, all of Boyd Gaming's Las Vegas casinos' computers are down.

It began late last night, an upgrade to a new system, but currently it's been over 12 hours without signs of being finished.

The B-Connected staff assures us that slot machines are still tracking play, despite the LCD just saying "Good Luck" when inserting our card.

The club has had an unexpected free day of relaxing, assuming relaxing entails dealing with angry players who can't obtain any comps, freeplay, or use points for food. We suspect there could be a run of scammers charging food to rooms, as there's no way to verify.

Boyd properties include downtown casinos Fremont, Main Street, and California, plus Sam's Town, The Orleans, Gold Coast, and Suncoast.

Player Club Wars -- Venetian vs. Harrah's

Venetian/Palazzo Resorts Las Vegas
Venetian • Palazzo Resorts Las Vegas

The Venetian and The Palazzo (both under the same ownership) have been revamping their Club Grazie player's club with some extras that we found interesting.

We, like casinos, use Harrah's Total Rewards program as the benchmark. So you know if any tiered player's club elects to go head-to-head with the giant, they either need to offer some unique or better benefits.

To start, the Grazie level is what everyone receives when first signing up for a free card.

Every $1 playthrough in slots gets you 1 point ($3 for video poker). Harrah's is $5 for every 1 point, but it breaks down differently because you earn rewards credits at varying levels, and it takes less points to earn more at Harrah's. If that makes any sense.

We're placing Venetian's Gold Level (30,000 points, $30k playthrough) at the same as Harrah's Diamond Level (11,000 points, $55k playthrough). So 1 point at Harrah's roughly equals 1.6 points at Venetian.

Back to Venetian's Gold Level, earning 2500 points will get you $15 in freeplay or a $10 gift card (acts as a $10 comp) or $5 in cash. Factoring in the extra bonus reward credits you receive, the Harrah's equivalent would be about $10 in comps. At some casinos around the country, Harrah's now offers conversions of your bonus reward credits to freeplay at the rate of half your comps, so $5 in freeplay. Venetian is the better value here at 3x.

If you're staying at the hotel and charge anything to the room, you'll receive 5 points for every $1 charged. At Harrah's, you now receive 1 bonus reward credit point for every $1 charged and then 1 tier credit for every $5. Strictly for tier level, that means you can get to the next level by charging $6,000 at Venetian or $55,000 for Harrah's. A no-brainer there. For comps, it's $6,000 vs. $11,000, so Venetian is still the winner there.

Moving up to Gold Level, members now earn points 50 percent faster at the rate of 1.5 for every $1 playthrough (1 point = $2.50 playthrough in video poker). A great deal that essentially keeps you at Gold at a third less play -- $20k playthrough. Harrah's is still $55k for Diamond.

And even better is the room charge: 20 points for every $1 charged. That means just charge $1500 per year to your room and you'll maintain Gold.

Gold Level also gets you things like access to the Gold Lounge (the Diamond Lounge is the much better deal but also more crowded), and a free shuttle to and from the airport. Harrah's has something similar for Diamond members, but at the cost of reward credits.

Harrah's has the upper hand in being able to use points for any of their hotels around the country, whereas Venetian just allows you two in Las Vegas. But what two they are -- all suites and luxury all the way.

Venetian also has higher-class restaurants and the slot machines have a bit higher payback.

To us, it's clear: Venetian's the way to go.

You can decide for yourself at Total Rewards and Club Grazie.

(Note we've left out the top two tiers in both programs because it isn't achievable to the bargain hunter.)

TI poker room launches Treasure Wheel

TI Poker Room
TI Poker Room

The TI (or Treasure Island) poker room has resurrected the ol' Excalibur wheel concept with some improvements.

Instead of just quads or better or having Aces cracked, you can also spin the wheel for playing 25 hours, getting a 1-card royal or straight flush, and by getting a bad beat (Aces Full beaten).

For April only, Monday-Thursday, if you're not happy with the amount you've won, you can respin to try to get a higher amount.

The wheel has more values than Excal's, ranging from $25 to $100 and also multipliers 2x-5x sprinkled throughout. If you get a multiplier, you spin again to see what you'll multiply (if you get another multiplier, you spin a third time and use the higher multiplier).

The wheel also contains cards, one for each spoke. If your first spin is a royal card (10 J Q K A of each suit) or a Joker (there are 2), you get that amount and then spin again to get complete the royal flush (whether another royal card in your suit or a Joker).

Get a royal in 5 spins with Joker(s) and win $10,000.

Get a royal in 5 spins without any Jokers and win $20,000.

Since Excalibur went electronic, the Treasure Wheel is the only poker wheel in Las Vegas, and one of the few if not only place where you can win something for Aces cracked -- 24 hours a day.

Hard Rock Las Vegas
The Joint at the Hard Rock Las Vegas

The newly opened Joint concert venue at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino has a seating capacity of a whopping 4,007 and has lined up some fantastic headliners in the upcoming months.

What we haven't had in our fine neon city is a big headliner in residence. Sure, we have the pop crooning of Bette Midler or Cher or Barry Manilow or Donny & Marie or Elton John... but what about the rockers? (We still miss Prince, the artist formerly in residence at Rio.)

That's about to change beginning May 27, with Carlos Santana announcing a long-term residency in Las Vegas at The Joint. Santana will be exclusive to the Hard Rock casino for at least 36 performances per year, through 2010.

Tickets are on sale now and range from $79 to $299. Purchase via Ticketmaster.com with their exorbitant fees or at any Hard Rock box office.

Attorney gambler who sued casinos stole from clients

Remember the New York City attorney who sued casinos for $20 million?

She's now going to jail for stealing from her clients in order to continue funding her gambling.

Arelia Taveras once earned half a million a year in her law practice, and in September 2007 she sued six casinos in Atlantic City and one in Las Vegas (MGM Grand), after a loss of $850,000. She claimed the casinos should have disbarred her, an admitted compulsive gambler, and that they should take responsibility to stop her from playing.

The suit was dropped with no appeal, because she didn't pay court fees.

Last week, Taveras plead guilty to stealing $130,000 from clients that she used to gamble.

She's now in jail and on April 27 will be sentenced to 3-9 years in prison.

From the clean lines of a modern Italian garden to the clutter of an old estate greenhouse, this is the place to bring the camera and friends for some great Kodak moments. One of the most photographed spots in Las Vegas, the Bellagio Resort's Conservatory and Botanical Garden is free.

The 2009 Spring Show is very camera friendly with the vivid colors of live flowers against the muted greens of more live plants and infused with the neon hues of Vegas. New bottomless section of pool open on Las Vegas Strip

shangri-lo.jpg

Topless sunbathers now have several pools to choose from in Las Vegas, and if you're female you'll get in at a discounted rate or free. If you're male, it'll cost you upwards of $50 at the Sapphire Pool (at the Rio), which features dancers from the Sapphire Gentlemen's Club. (If you're a Sapphire dancer, you get in free and get free food and drinks.)

Beginning today, Imperial Palace opens Shangri-Lo, a new section of their Shangri-La pool that for $14.99, guests may enter a private area that's bottomless.

And in what some may think is role reversal just desserts, women are charged $50 for entry to what's expected to be male-dominated entertainment.

The $14.99 fee also includes a plastic beer stein that, like the pool, is bottomless with free refills.

Tops are required.

Topless and bottomless pool sections are permitted in casinos because they're fenced in, thereby upholding public safety, health, and morals.
