Minus 5 ice lounge holds guess-the-heat contest

minus5.jpg

With temperatures in the more modest 90s, when will be the day this summer that we hit 105 degrees?

The coldest bar in Las Vegas (on purpose) is Minus 5, located in Mandalay Place at the entrance of Mandalay Bay.

For $25, you get a drink and are outfitted in a parka, gloves, boots, and are let loose in their frozen bar that's set at a chilling minus 5 degrees (Celsius, about 23 degrees Fahrenheit).

We enjoyed our visit to the 2,000 sq. ft. ice lounge and take our out-of-town friends who are looking to see Elvis ice sculptures while drinking vodka from a glass made of ice.

Now Minus 5 is holding a contest to see who will first pick the day that Las Vegas temps hit 105 degrees (Fahrenheit).

At stake is VIP access to Minus 5, dinner for five at the rm seafood restaurant (downstairs and across from Minus 5), and a private table at MIX Lounge with bottle service.

You must be 21 to enter, and simply send your guess plus contact information to winner@minus5experience.com.

For more information on the Minus 5 Experience, visit this link.

Cirque du Soleil to set another global record for simultaneous stilt-walking

cirquestilts.jpg

From bikini contests to Santa Run contests, Las Vegas has it all.

And now, to celebrate its 25th anniversary, Cirque du Soleil is shooting to get a Guinness World Record for the most people walking on stilts at the same time (it's already in the Book from an event 5 years ago).

The event takes place June 16 around the world, including Las Vegas.

You can participate by viewing the how-to video and guide (including how to build your own stilts) at this link.

The link will later be updated with more information with exact locations and times.

FAO Schwarz at Caesars Palace purchased by Toys R Us

Next time you're looking for a big, motorized, mechanical animal in front of FAO Schwarz, it might be a giraffe. As in, Geoffrey the Giraffe.

The high-end toy company was purchased by Toys R Us.

We still feel like tourists whenever walking through The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, especially whenever passing by FAO Schwarz and seeing what big new toy they have in front of the store.

Toys R Us will operate the Las Vegas store as well as the flagship store in New York City. Both are expected to continue using the FAO Schwarz brand.

If you're as old as we are, you may remember FAO Schwarz featured in the 1988 movie Big, when Tom Hanks plays the giant piano by hopping on the keys.

FAO Schwarz predates the film as well as Toys R Us by over 100 years.

Susan Boyle to appear in Las Vegas with Donny Osmond

Flamingos at the Flamingo Las Vegas

Susan Boyle, the overnight singing sensation from Britain's Got Talent, will make an appearance at the Flamingo Las Vegas.

Boyle racked up a whopping 61+ million hits for her YouTube video of her wowing the crowd with her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables. That's

Immediately the 47-year-old drew comparisons to her singing idol Elaine Page, which continued this past weekend with her followup "Memory" from Cats.

On a radio show, Page acknowledged Boyle's talent and said that they should perhaps do a duet together.

But Boyle is also a fan to Donny Osmond, and the Flamingo is gearing up for what may be Boyle's first appearance in the U.S. -- right alongside Osmond.

Osmond invited Boyle to perform a duet with him and his sister Marie, which could happen as early as June.

Longest craps roll in Las Vegas broken in Atlantic City

Saturday night, almost 20 years to the day, Stanley Fujitake's record for the longest craps roll in history was broken.

On May 28, 1989, Fujitake had his historic craps streak at The California in downtown Las Vegas. He rolled for 3 hours 6 minutes, for 118 rolls and 18 pass line wins.

While there's no record of how much was won at the table, it's estimated to be around $200,000.

This past weekend on May 23, the impossible happened again: Fujitake's record was shattered by Patricia Demauro at the Borgata in Atlantic City. She rolled for 4 hours 18 minutes, for 154 rolls.

Reports say this was her second time playing craps, and she bought in for $100. Almost 4 1/2 hours later, she was done and the Borgata celebrated the historic moment with Dom Perignon, a free meal, and a free suite.

Demauro plans to take her daughter and grandkids to Disneyland with her winnings.

A main theater will seat 2,050 seats, along with a 300-seat cabaret theater and 200-seat studio theater.

Terrance Watanabe lost over $100 million to Las Vegas, claims Harrah's drugged him

Rio All-Suite Resort Las Vegas

You may have heard that in February, Terrance Watanabe (of the Oriental Trading novelty company which he sold in 2000) owes $14.7 million to Harrah's properties from gambling debts.

You may know that he lost over $100 million gambling in Las Vegas casinos, primarily Rio and Caesars Palace (both Harrah's properties).

You may also know that Harrah's is after Watanabe, who did not pay casino markers in time, as well as wrote bad checks as much as $875,000.

And that he was indicted by a grand jury on these accounts.

But now Watanabe is back in court, fighting back at Harrah's, claiming they kept him intoxicated with alcohol and prescription painkillers while he gambled, so that they could allegedly pull from him as much money as they could while he was inebriated.

And he has witnesses who will testify that employees from Caesars Palace gave him Lortab, a prescription painkiller that can be habit-forming and cause impairment particularly when combined with alcohol. He maintains they even sent a box of the pills to his room in a candy box.

First Phantom of the Opera fans week to take place in Las Vegas

phantomfansweek.jpg

Phanties unite!

Er, Phanters?

The first ever (that we know of) Phantom of the Opera fans week takes place in Las Vegas, centered around the long-running Broadway show that conveniently happens to be playing at The Venetian (and a mighty good adaptation, we think, despite its 90-minute running time).

The gathering of all fans takes place from Sept. 16-20 with events including:

Sept. 16: performance

Sept. 17: meet the cast, 90 minutes with Phantom star Anthony Crivello, performance, masquerade ball

Sept. 18: 90 minutes with costume designer Sam Fleming, session with the designer of the chandelier, chat with producer Scott Zeiger over dinner at Wolfgang Puck's Postrio ($80 extra), performance

Sept. 19: 90 minutes with production designer Paul Kelly, keynote address from Tony Award-winning director Hal Prince, two performances

Sept. 20: brunch at Bouchon ($40 extra)

Registration levels are at $250, $335, $410, or $475 (which includes all of the above and all four performances).

Register at this link before June 25 for $25 off.

M Resort lays off 100 people, but is it because of the economy?

With the constant streaming crowd we've seen at the new M Resort (a few miles south of Las Vegas Blvd., off St. Rose), we're a bit puzzled that they made news recently about laying off 100 people.

Any layoffs from Las Vegas casinos is newsworthy in this economy, but with M -- and any new property -- additional people are always hired to facilitate the large crowds around a grand opening.

The $1 billion M just opened in March.

With other casino conglomerates such as Harrah's or MGM Mirage or Station Casinos, workers are borrowed from sister properties, along with many temps, with the expectation of being moved or laid off after crowds settled down.

We don't know the entire story with M, but we suspect the layoffs are independent of the economy and are natural after 2 1/2 months of being in business.

The 100 people amounts to 5 percent of the 2,000 employees it takes to run the 92,000-sq.-ft. property.

British Airways to open shop in Las Vegas, offering nonstop flights from London

With airlines cutting back on flights to Las Vegas, one international airline is rolling the dice on international tourists looking to gamble by adding a daily nonstop flight.

Beginning at the end of October, British Airways will shuttle passengers to and from Heathrow and McCarran International -- about an 11-hour flight.

Previously, London visitors to Las Vegas had to layover a few hours in a U.S. international aiport; now they have a straight shot.

After fees and taxes, roundtrip airfare is expected to be about 460 GBP (about $700).

Alas, the dollar isn't as good as it once was a couple years ago, where Brits were getting as much as $2 for every pound, but $1.53 still isn't bad.

Flights can be booked today for travel beginning Oct. 25 at this link.

This is British Airways' first time in Las Vegas. Currently, only competitor Virgin Atlantic offers flights from London to Las Vegas.

Penthouse to turn into Crazy Horse III (or The Playground, or...)

Crazy Horse Too
Will there be another Crazy Horse Gentlemen's Club?

The Penthouse Gentlemen's Club (which used to be called Sin) off south Strip is no more (the licensing agreement ran out), but will now soon change to The Playground.

Or will it?

If Vegas Alliance (who will run The Playground) has any say, they would like to rename the strip club to Crazy Horse III, after Crazy Horse Too, the lawsuit-embroiled club up a few miles north that's been closed for about 3 years thanks to racketeer Rick Rizzolo.

But with the name comes responsibility, or rather hefty legal cases that their lawyers would prefer first be settled before being associated (if by name only) with the notorious gentlemen's club.

The Playground (or whatever new name is picked) will comprise a strip joint, a nightclub, a music venue, and even a place for a poker tournament.

Think of it like CityCenter for adult nightlife.

Illusionist Criss Angel has been accused of stealing a cat.

The cat's owner is Jeff Beacher from Beacher's Madhouse, who let Angel care for his cat named Hamlet while mourning the loss of his parents.

The odd case reported by Page 6 in New York states that Angel called Beacher and told him "The cat no longer likes you" and "The cat and I have become close friends."

Beacher's Madhouse is currently housed at Hard Rock, and Criss Angel is performing in the Cirque du Soleil Believe show at Luxor.

"What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" to remain slogan

Vegas Bound.

Take a break.

Play Las Vegas.

Viva Las Vegas.

Nobody does it better.

These are all slogans that the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has come up with the past few years, but all pale in comparison to their 2003 slogan, "What Happens Here Stays Here" (or outside of Vegas, "What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas").

So the LCVCA is returning to the award-winning slogan that put them on the map, coming up with a new series of campaigns centered around the oft-imitated phrase that at once tells everyone that your secrets are safe in Las Vegas.

LCVCA spends approximately $80 million per year to advertise the Las Vegas brand.

Joan Rivers is the Latest Celebrity Apprentice

Annie Duke
Annie Duke, 2009 Celebrity Apprentice runner up

Annie Duke maintained her composure and kept a game face on during the many personal attacks from Joan Rivers. It certainly looked good for the poker world to have a class act with brains representing the millions of poker players around the world.

In the final task of fund raising the red haired Annie collected almost a half million dollars for her charity, Refugees International; while, her heads-up opponent Joan Rivers had to settle for $150K gathered for her charity, God's Love We Deliver. This simply proves what all of us already know...Poker Players are generous to a fault.

But, as is often the case in any major poker tournament the chip leader doesn't always win. Going into the final task with an almost 3 - 1 lead in charity dollars collected couldn't swing the final vote to Annie's side of the table. Congratulations to Joan Rivers for her ability to hang tough even though she is 75 years old. Gray Power rules.

Congratulations to Annie Duke for playing the game better than most and coming away with her pride intact.

ESPN's E:60 Examines Delaware Effort to Legalize Sports Books

ESPN's primetime newsmagazine E:60 will examine Delaware's efforts to legalize sports betting in the episode airing Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. ET. This innovative series is into its second year of producing sports related cutting-edge investigative reporting.

Delaware's state legislature barely kept a bill allowing the legalization of sports betting from passing into law with a margin of only two votes. Delaware's governor, Jack Markell, has vowed to reintroduce the legislation and and ramrod it to a successful passage in his efforts to cash in on taxing the billions of illegal sports betting currently taking place. Markell believes this infusion of cash can no longer be ignored. It's desperately needed to plug some of the gaping holes in Delaware's evaporating economy.

Delaware would become the second state to allow legal sports books along with Nevada. Las Vegas Hilton Sports Book Executive Director, Jay Kornegay, will be one of the featured experts on the Tuesday episode. Preview a clip of the show with this link.

Tune-in on Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. ET, and stay informed on these important issues, especially if you're one of the majority of people that go to Las Vegas, go to Atlantic City, go to Indian casinos, play online poker, play live poker, bet any sports, bet the ponies, bet the doggies, play the slots, play KENO, play tournament poker, play bingo, play games, buy lottery tickets, bets on anything, bets on everything. It's really a personal freedom thing.

Neonopolis Galaxy Theatres to close

Neonopolis movie theaters
Neonopolis movie theaters

Our beloved Neonopolis movie theaters will close after tomorrow.

Recently purchased by Galaxy Theatres, these theaters once were our favorite place to go to catch a flick, mostly because we felt like it was our personal screening room, with barely anyone ever there. One matinee, we were the only ones in the audience.

It was also one of the cheapest ticket rates.

Lately, all of Neonopolis has been criticized for the lack of central air conditioning. Developer Rohit Joshi has been in a dispute with certain costs of the air conditioning contractor, and until it's resolved, Neonopolis has lost its cool.

With temperatures zooming up as we begin the summer, this would make seeing a movie more than a bit uncomfortable.

While the heat is only a recent reason, we suspect the writing's been on the wall for the downtown Fremont movie theater for quite awhile now.

Galaxy also runs the movie theaters at the Cannery (the original one on Craig) and will soon open at the new M Resort (on St. Rose off I-15).

LVCVA encourages locals to wear blue next Tuesday

In an effort to promote tourism in Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority wants all locals to wear blue next Tuesday, May 12.

Wearing one of the state colors, they say, will show support in a time when visitors to Las Vegas continues to decrease each month, not helped by the swine flu and President Obama's comment about companies not using federal bailout money for conventions in Las Vegas (compared with other cities, Las Vegas is generally cheaper but viewed by others as more a vacation).

Okay, that's what they would have you believe. Wearing blue for the good of the state. Better blue than, well, not blue.

But what will wearing blue actually do? Not to criticize the LVCVA too much, but they're the ones who have spent millions of dollars coming up with slogans to attract people to Vegas. How much money was spent brainstorming this promotion?

We could of course be misreading the press release for the joke it could be intended as, using blue to poke fun at the Democrats who they perceive helped hurt the tourist market with recent comments.

But it just doesn't make sense, either as a joke or as a rally.

Better blue than the flu?

Las Vegas Headliner, Danny Gans, Passes Away

1956 - 2009

Las Vegas entertainer Danny Gans passed away early Friday morning. Gans was the headliner at the Encore Resort and over the years had been billed as "The Man of Many Voices".

Gans, who was 52 years old, has been named "Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year" nearly a dozen times. According to reports he died of an apparent heart attack sometime after 3:00 a.m.

Danny Gans dies in his sleep

Impressionist Danny Gans died suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep early this morning.

"The Man of Many Voices" recently moved from The Mirage to Encore Las Vegas in an exclusive multi-million dollar contract with Steve Wynn.

Wynn first discovered Gans's talent from the Stratosphere and Rio and later hired him for The Mirage in 2000. When Siegfried & Roy left, Gans received premium placement on billboards.

Wynn hired Gans away from The Mirage earlier this year to inaugurate the launch of Encore.

He was 52.
