Republican Fred Thompson, the actor-politician who attracted more attention as a potential presidential candidate than as a real one, quit the race for the White House on Tuesday after a string of poor finishes in early primary and caucus states. Thompson becomes the biggest loser on the Republican side and joins the likes of Democrats Biden, Dodd, and Richardson as big name politicians who weren't generating much excitement. Thompson, with uncanny savvy, timed his entrance into the race with the Hollywood writers strike and was never able to recover from his early lack of memorable lines.
