Dems begin tinkering "up" economic stimulus plan

From the article Senate Democrats adding to stimulus:

Senate Democrats will move to add to a $150 billion economic stimulus package rebates for senior citizens living off Social Security and an extension of unemployment benefits, setting up a clash with the White House and House leaders who are pushing a narrower package.
...
The president and House leaders agreed last week on a proposal to provide rebates to 117 million families and to give businesses $50 billion in incentives to invest in new plants and equipment. The goal is to help head off a recession and boost consumer confidence.

But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., quickly said the Senate would consider adding to that plan, including extending unemployment benefits, boosting home heating subsidies, raising food stamp benefits and approving money for public works projects.

Ah, Congress works in mysterious ways...every opportunity is seized (hey, an exception to the i before e except after c rule--a teachable moment) to put back what the 1990's took away. And though I am just a poor boy from a poor family--means I might actually qualify for those food stamps in this economy, but I won't partake--I won't get much more than the $300 for my teenage son (That will be about three weeks of groceries with his metabolism.), since I am not in the income bracket that would buy a "consumer good" such as a flat screen TV or invest in propping up the one legged stock market. Actually, I suppose some people might use the checks to pay off some of that credit card interest and never buy goods with it.

Plus, I really can't wait until June--or August or September after the tinkering--as the kid wants to eat right now.

Harry Reid's land deals lead to a lawsuit by a public interest group

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's longtime relationship with a powerful Nevada real estate developer has given rise to a lawsuit by a public interest group.
Judicial Watch wants to know if the Nevada Democrat and other state politicians exerted undue pressure on the federal government on behalf of his friend.

Mr. Reid was at the head of the Democrats' campaign against the "culture of corruption" in Washington. But for years, the Los Angeles Times reported, Reid was active in clearing hurdles to the development.

Judicial Watch is suing the Bureau of Land Management for documents related to the 43,000-acre Coyote Springs housing and recreational development northeast of Las Vegas, now in its early stages. The lawsuit alleges the bureau failed to respond to a Freedom of Information Act request of March 8.

Lawyer and lobbyist Harvey Whittemore, a shareholder in the law firm of Lionel Sawyer & Collins, is the driving force behind the project and a political contributor to Mr. Reid. Mr. Whittemore has employed Leif Reid, a son of the senator, as an attorney.

I wonder just how many politicians and atttorneys are going to get rich from this, especially after the glowing support by Senator Reid, Senator Ensign, former Governor Kenny Guinn, President and CEO of the Nevada Development Authority Somer Hollingsworth, Joe Pantuso of the Southern Nevada Homebuilders Association, and Pat Mulroy of the Southern Nevada Water Authority to name a few.

Democrats take aim at globalization

Nina Easton of Fortune writes in her article, The China Conflict, that for the Democrats, China -- and its massive trade imbalance with the United States -- has emerged as a favorite parable about the dangers of globalization, especially when this adversary/ally holds more than $400 billion in U.S. Treasuries.

She reports the line played well Tuesday night before an AFL-CIO audience that broke into applause when Illinois Senator Barack Obama said he would "take [China leaders] to the mat" for "manipulating their currency," adding that huge U.S. deficits, financed in part by the Chinese, must end.

"It's pretty hard to have a tough negotiation when the Chinese are our bankers," Obama declared to a cheering crowd.

New York Senator Hillary Clinton added "bad food from China" and toys that sicken children to the list of complaints about the country. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson cited the country's human rights record and failure to "put pressure on the Sudan to stop the genocide in Darfur." Connecticut Senator Christopher Dodd described China as a competitor but "be careful, it's getting close to adversary."

Unfortunately, this is the same party whose Democratic National Committee took millions in donations from Chinese citizens when Bill and Al were running for office in the 1990's; the party which put a Chinese agent, John Huang, into the Commerce Dept.; the party of Woodrow Wilson, the original globalist who signed into law the creation of the Federal Reserve, a central bank based on European models of central banking, signed into law the first income tax, and created the League of Nations, a failed attempt to move the world in the direction of a world governing body. And now Democrats are against globalization? Only in front of union labor, but in the back rooms of power with international bankers, globalization is the way to go.

Boys and girls, if you support the Republicans, you will get globalization; if you support Democrats, you will get globalization; only the rhetoric on the way will be different.
