The Golden Nugget Resort in downtown Las Vegas.

The Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas has been welcoming guests since it opened its doors in 1946 and was declared the largest casino in the world. Occupying one of the four famous downtown corners at Casino Center and Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas for six decades the Nugget got a new lease on life in 1972 with the arrival of Steve Wynn, the young Las Vegas visionary. The Golden Nugget was the first Steve Wynn Vegas project, the place where he honed his talents to build a better Las Vegas. Locals and tourist alike were literally overwhelmed by the luxurious downtown gambling palace of Steve Wynn. Colorful rare Middle Eastern carpets framed by gleaming white marble floors, enough potted plants to start your own rainforest, some of the finest appointed hotel rooms in the city, gourmet restaurants, a showroom that opened with headliner Frank Sinatra plus all of these amenities wrapped up in a new exterior of white and gold.

New poker room at the Golden Nugget is located in the main casino close to everything.

Title to the Golden Nugget has passed through a number of hands since Wynn sold out to MGM Mirage. MGM spun off the downtown property to dot com zillionaires, Tim Poster and Tom Breitling, and became their production set for a TV show. Finally the dot com golden boys got tired of casino work and sold out to Landry's Restaurant Inc. in 2005. The Landry's people have taken the responsibility of owning and managing a Wynn designed casino/resort quite seriously and they are continuing to maintain and upgrade the luxurious property.

None of that original Wynn luster has worn off; buffed to an even higher luster the Golden Nugget is just as glamorous as the day Wynn opened the doors. Three towers house 1,907 well appointed guest rooms and suites which are all being completely renovated. Wynn's trademark marble bathrooms and upscale fixtures remain. Smoking, non-smoking, and handicap rooms are offered and you can quickly check availability, pricing, and do your own booking online at the Golden Nugget website. Discount room deals are currently being offered due to the construction. High speed Internet is available and express checkout means no standing in line. The luxurious Golden Nugget suites offer the best views of downtown Las Vegas and the Fremont Street Experience through the floor to ceiling windows of a two story suite. Surround yourself with luxury including a Bose sound systems and plasma screen displays. Your stay downtown will be an unforgettable experience.

Starbucks sidewalk cafe at the Golden Nugget is downtown's best place to people watch while enjoying your favorite coffee.

No need to leave the property if you're in need of a gourmet meal. Vic & Anthony's Steakhouse serves great steaks, chops and fresh seafood with service that pays strict attention to the slightest detail. Prepare for an elegant dinner in a romantic atmosphere. Perhaps you seek dining that's more adventurous, a stop at Lillie's Noodle House is in order. Guests are in for an exotic dining experience from a traditional Asian specialties menu featuring delicacies of the Far East. The award winning Golden Nugget Buffet is being remodeled and will reopen in September with even more variety of high end offerings for the crowd that insists on having it all. A twenty four hour coffee shop in a spacious upscale atmosphere offers a complete menu of specialties. Only want a cup of designer coffee and a place to sit outside among the tourists at the Fremont Street Experience? The Golden Nugget's Starbucks offers exactly such a place, an outdoor patio under the Fremont Street Experience canopy.

One of the best poker room comp policies in Las Vegas is found at the Nugget. Play 4 hours and receive a food comp for $10 and you can do it once a day. Win one of the daily tournaments for a ticket to one of four Freerolls offering a $10K seat in the 2007 WSOP main event as the prize. Complete details of all promotions and daily tournaments are available by telephoning the poker room direct at 702.386.8383.

I spent an afternoon in the new Golden Nugget poker room visiting with swing shift manager David Tuttle. It gave me the opportunity to watch a mid-week crowd of players in action building some serious pots while enjoying the quiet elegance of a really plush room. The evening tournament can pack the room.
Being a fan of luxurious surroundings, especially when I'm playing poker, I welcome the addition of one of the most comfortable, well appointed poker rooms in Las Vegas. It's not the biggest poker room in Las Vegas but it is one of the nicest.
