Lost Vegas Book Review

Lost Vegas: The Redneck Riviera, Existentialist Conversations with Strippers, and the World Series of Poker by Paul ‘Dr. Pauly’ McGuire [Buy Lost Vegas][Visit the Lost Vegas Home Page]

If you like Dr. Pauly's writing you'll love this book, if you like Vegas you'll love this book, in short, if you're reading this blog the odds are you'll love Lost Vegas.

At the same time as he's revealing the depraved underbelly of the city, Dr. Pauly covers the high-stakes poker scene and in particular, The World Series of Poker during the absolute pinnacle of the media poker craze. Author Paul McGuire uncovers some of the most personal, honest and heart-touching stories from the city.ith poker and Vegas as the back-drop these stories create a vivid impact that, at times, strikes deep into the human psyche, and other times is laugh out loud funny. Stirring sums it up well.

Sometimes I felt slightly bogged down by the rapid fire sketches of characters drifting in and out of the frame; but, I found if I gave them as much attention as the author it helped to clarify the events and experiences rather then blurring them. In fact, one chapter I found particularly fascinating focuses on one of the fly-by-night characters, who then drifts out of frame never to return.

If you want a great read about Vegas that you can digest in bite sized segments while viewing the city from angles you didn't even know existed, then Dr. Pauly's Lost Vegas will take you there in a sublime literary style.
