The Luxor Resort and Casino on the South Las Vegas Strip.

A giant black glass pyramid reaching 36 stories into the Las Vegas sky is the Vegas version of the glamour days of the mighty Egyptian Empire. Inside the pyramid is the world's largest open atrium with 29 million cubic feet of volume, a truly awe inspiring sight. At the apex of the great Vegas pyramid is the world's brightest light beam comprised of 45 high output Xenon lights sending a distinctive narrow beam into the night sky. A light so powerful it can be seen from anywhere in the valley and some nights as far away as Kingman, Arizona, it can even be seen from outer space as reported by astronauts orbiting earth. Welcome to the Luxor Resort and Casino. The Luxor Hotel has 4,407 rooms making it the third largest hotel in the world. All of the rooms are oversized and appointed in an expected Egyptian motif. Contained within the pyramid are spa suites with deep tubs and a million dollar view of the Las Vegas casino corridor.

The Luxor prides itself on offering everything a Pharaoh could desire, even a modern day Pharaoh-minded guest that wants the latest in modern amenities, top-line creature comforts and service. Consider the Luxor to be a digitized version of the lifestyles enjoyed by ancient Egyptian royalty.

The Luxor, spectacular from any view.

Food is always one of the top priorities of the Las Vegas visitor and the Luxor has the variety and quality that is sure to please. Fast food from known national brands is available on the second atrium level above the casino floor. Want a quick snack, a designer coffee or some comfort food then head up to the Atrium level and enjoy some relaxing time away from the casino gaming. The Luxor also offers the elegant Luxor Steakhouse, Asian selections at Fusia, south of the border favorites at La Salsa, the 24 hour Pyramid Cafe with standard Vegas coffee shop fare, the Backstage Deli is so good you'll think you're in New York, and the Pharaoh's Pheast Buffet located in the subterranean basement of the great pyramid. Whatever the hungry guest wants it can be found at the Luxor including 24 hour room service from a complete menu.

Amenities at the Luxor include five lush tropical acres with four swimming pools, four Jacuzzis and the Oasis Health Spa. The public is invited to see The Tomb and Museum of King Tutankhamun or try the motion based simulator show, In Search of the Obelisk, following a crew of in its race against the evil Dr. Osiris for the crystal obelisk. Additional motion simulators offer different rides while the Luxor IMAX Theater dazzles the senses with movies shown in an oversize wrap around format. The Pirates 4D includes takes the IMAX experience even further with multi-sensory special effects. Don't forget about the Luxor's wedding chapel.

The Luxor Poker room.

Located next to Nefertiti's Lounge, the 14 table poker room offers players a great view of the main casino floor. The Luxor poker room enjoys a good mix of tourist and locals filling the tables around the clock. A favorite room with the younger poker playing crowd in town for some poker and a great time keeps the room filled. Jim Wellington manages the Luxor poker room and brings more than three decades of poker industry experience to the comfortable room. I enjoyed spending the afternoon chatting with another longtime Las Vegas poker person, someone that goes back far enough to remember the 6-Card Stud game played at the Circus-Circus.

Texas Hold'em is offered in a variety of structured limits including $2-$4 with a Half Kill, $3-$6, and $4-$8 with a Half Kill. No-Limit Hold'em is spread in $1-$1-$2 Triple Blinds with a $50 min/max Buy-In and a bigger $2-$5 Blinds with a $100 min/max Buy-In. Every day at 2:00 PM the poker room offers a poker school with a free basic playing lesson. A $1-$2 Limit Hold'em game follows the lesson. The Luxor's free poker lesson is a great way for the Internet only experienced players to learn the table rules and etiquette while getting a feel for live Las Vegas casino poker. The low limit makes for an ideal setting to learn live action poker.

Daily at Noon is a $30 Buy-In No-Limit Hold'em tournament limited to the first 74 sign-ups. Every evening at 8:30 PM is a $62 Buy-In No-Limit Hold'em event. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00 PM is a $50 Buy-In No-Limit Hold'em tournament and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday beginning at Midnight is another of the $62 Buy-In No-Limit Hold'em tournaments. All tournaments have an optional $3 add-on for an additional $200 in tournament chips. A $3,500 Freeroll tournament entry requires only 15 hours of play during the weekly qualifying periods and first place pays $800. Complete details of all the tournaments and freerolls plus the high hand cash promo is available by calling the poker room direct at 702.730.5511.

Players receive food comps at the rate of $5 for 4 hours of play per day. The comps are good at various food outlets within the resort. Poker Players also qualify for a casino rate on rooms (depending on availability) by playing 4 hours per day.

The Luxor's Poker Room is considering a move to the sports book area, adding some tables and going digital for the added convenience of the players. The Luxor is one of those things that must be experienced live and in person. The grandeur of the world's biggest atrium must be experienced first hand so stop at the Luxor Resort on the Las Vegas Strip and enter the exotic world within the big black pyramid.
