A member of the Five Star Alliance and considered one of the finest hotels in the world, the Ritz-Carlton in Henderson will be shutting down because of a lack of funding by Village Hospitality (Deutsche Bank).

They will also be laying off 400 employees but will try to relocate them to other Marriott properties (which runs the Ritz-Carlton chain).

Lake Las Vegas has been in bankruptcy since July 2008 after the developer defaulted on a loan of $540 million. The Ritz-Carlton, which received the prestigious AAA Five-Diamond award, also filed for bankruptcy.

Sarah Palin will be in Searchlight (near Hoover Dam) on March 27 to promote the Tea Party Express's tour.

Searchlight is the home town of Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Palin was reportedly paid $100,000 to speak this weekend in Nashville, and is also reportedly not being paid for her Searchlight appearance.

The bus tour will span 42 cities and end April 15 in Washington, D.C.

College students with valid student ID can check out The Lion King (at Mandalay Bay) for only $25.50.

Just show up at the box office for day-of-show tickets. You can purchase two, but the purchaser must show college ID.

Note that this isn't confined to Nevada colleges, but any college student.

Regular tickets run up to $113.

The Stratosphere Tower is 1,149 feet (350 meters) tall, the tallest structure in Las Vegas or the entire state of Nevada. In fact, it's the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States and the second tallest in the whole Western Hemisphere and it's not even on our list of the ten tallest buildings in Las Vegas, because it's not a building. Neither is the 540 feet (165 meters) Eiffel tower at the Paris Las Vegas.

Our list of tallest consist of buildings that may or may not be inhabited. They must be finished or at least topped our at their designed height and that requirement makes the 735 feet (224 meters) Fountainebleau the tallest building in Las Vegas or Nevada. Las Vegas has more than 160 high rise structures with 40 of those buildings over 400 feet tall. An approved 815 foot tall (248 meters) building to house the World Jewelry Market planned for downtown Las Vegas is on hold until the current economic picture brightens.

Harrah's has released win-loss statements for 2009.

But are you sure you want to see how much you've lost? Those visits to the casino really do add up.

Go to Harrah's and plug in your Total Rewards number and password.

Then click "My TR" and on the left, click "WIN/LOSS STATEMENT."

On the new page, the default year is 2009 but you can also draw from 2005-2008.

Check "I accept the Terms and Conditions" and press "GO" and a PDF will be generated showing all your wins and losses at all Harrah's properties.

Even though we always use our Total Rewards card, we don't think the data is entirely accurate. Your mileage may vary.

Nestled throughout CityCenter is one of the world's largest corporate art collection -- and it's all being shown for free.

Already on display to the public are works by artists including Jenny Holzer, Maya Lin, Richard Long, Henry Moore, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Nancy Rubins, Frank Stella, and more.

Beginning tomorrow through Feb. 22, an 80-panel, 4-part photo exhibit will launch displaying 30 years of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and China.

The exhibit has toured through China, New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles before coming to Las Vegas.

According to a report published this month by the Guttmacher Institute, teen pregnancies in Las Vegas are increasing after more than 16 years of decline. The numbers just in awards Las Vegas with the number two spot for for pregnant teens.

Blame for this unwanted honor is being placed on the lack of contraceptive information that would educate teens about choices for recreational sex. Apparently the policy of preaching abstinence just isn't getting through (abstinence hasn't worked very well with the reefer crowd, either).

Considering how much Las Vegas likes to be first at most everything (see the home foreclosure post below) check back a little later to see if SinCity takes over this number one spot, too.

It isn't much of a surprise, but at five times the national average, Las Vegas had the highest foreclosures of any city in the country for 2009.

That amounts to 1 out of 8 homeowners.

Number two was Cape Coral in Florida, with the next three being California cities Merced, Riverside, and Stockton.

The lowest foreclosure rate was in Burlington, Vermont.

Gregory Thomas Burns tried just that while flying from Washington, D.C. to Las Vegas last week.

Claiming he was drunk on beer and tranquilizers, Burns was observed trying to open the door but was prevented by passengers.

He was arrested on a federal offense of interfering with a flight crew. He could get up to 20 years in prison along with a $250,000 fine.

His alleged action caused the flight to land in Denver to make sure Burns wasn't a terrorist.

Girl scouts playing hockey?

Get out your sashes and cookies -- on March 12, the Las Vegas Wranglers will be dressing up as girl scouts.

A game event night similar to dressing as Rod Blagojevich (ousted Chicago governor) in prison or dressing up as strippers (our favorite) has led the Wranglers to Girl Scout Night, in honor of the Scouts' 98th birthday.

The Wranglers will be playing the Bakersfield Condors at the Orleans Arena (at The Orleans) for $10 a ticket, some of which will go toward the Las Vegas Girl Scouts of Frontier Council.

The girl scout hockey uniform will also be on silent auction.
