Plaza Ultimate Poker Challenge & the Nines List.
A quick note first and foremost Felicia Lee has switched homes again, her blog is now over at blogspot and she already has a new massive post up.
We attended the luncheon for the Laugh Across America groups Three Days of comedy in Las Vegas at the Golden Nugget. No poker but a great panel session with a group of comedians, including Shelly Berman. Shelly remains the razor sharp wit and perfectly timed master of comedy. I enjoyed the session and meeting one of the funniest people I have ever known was a special treat.
Back to poker. A short walk down Fremont Street and the Prof and I are at the Plaza Hotel where the Ultimate Poker Challenge is being played. The hotel has undergone some improvements in the last few days with all new carpet, new non-airlock entrances, general cleanup and new painting. Barrick Gaming Corporation, the new owner of the Plaza Hotel, is good for the place and their efforts are breathing life back into the original “Queen of Downtown” located at Number 1 Main Street. Many years ago I attended the grand opening of the Union Plaza and was fortunate enough to get invited to the VIP pre-public festivities. I recalled a buffet that was straight out of the movies. All the stars were in town for the gala bash. It was the first time I had been around so much Hollywood royalty so I wandered around in an awestruck state.
Really back to poker this time. Today’s Ultimate Poker Challenge was down to four tables when we arrived and some well known professional players were there. Chris Ferguson was giving lessons at his table while the Jetts, Chip and Karina, remained in the action.
Matt Savage was handling the tournament in his usual professional fashion. He made a point of welcoming us to the event and assured me that we will have complete media access. The film crew was set up filming the host, Chad Brown, and this week’s co-host Amir Vahedi. One of the TV production managers took time to introduce himself and made us feel most comfortable. I guess that word has gotten around about the shabby treatment from the WPPA so this was particularly good for me. The final table from today’s tournament will be played tomorrow and I will get some photos. The Ultimate Poker Challenge Tournament is getting down to last qualifying event and will be moving on to the semi-finals so if you have entertained the idea playing in this one then show up soon and enter. The $1000 entry fee can turn into millions.
