The 37th event of the 2005 World Series of Poker crowned a champion early today. A few minutes after three this morning the final hand was played and Jon Heneghan won all the chips and the championship. He is the 2005 WSOP $1,000 buy-in No-limit Hold'em with Rebuys champion. Jon receives $611,015 first place money and one of the cherished gold 2005 WSOP Championship bracelets. Second place finisher, Paul Deng, goes away with $324,305 cash for his efforts.
The final hand begin with Deng going all-in with his 5,10 of diamonds after the flop showed Jd, Ks, 4d. He shoved his slightly less than one million in chips into the pot and after a few moments of contemplation Jon said ,"I call." His stack of approximately $1.4 million in play money had Deng covered. The railbirds gave out a unified audible groan of surprise at the move. Jon turned over a 10,J of clubs giving him the lead with his pair of Jacks. Deng looked the board over and stated, "I need diamonds." The turn was the eight of clubs and the river sealed the win with a 7 of clubs. Jon Heneghan raised his arms in victory while a smiling Deng quickly shook his hand.
The event attracted a field of 894 entrants and recorded a record 1584 rebuys and add-ons. Robert Aron finished third and collected $188,000 while Gary Do went out fourth and picked up $164,500.
Only one more regularly scheduled event before the '2005 $10,000 Big One' begins on Thursday with the first of three flights of 2200 entrants each. Event #39, No-limit 2 to 7 Draw Lowball with Rebuys, played down to a final table of seven this evening with the players scheduled to return on Wednesday to determine a champion. A super satellite was played today and another is scheduled to be played on Wednesday along with the media charity tournament so plenty of WSOP poker action remains at the Rio. Tomorrow is the first day of the WSOP four day run trade show. Many exhibitors will be manning booths directed toward the poker playing public so if you are in the neighborhood stop by and visit.
We will be at booth #107, Poker Player Newspaper.com.
I had to not only shoot the photos of tonight's event but write the report since our star scribe, Dr. Pauly, and the Poker Prof decided to go to the Full Tilt party over at the Wynn. They hung out with many of the movers and shakers of the poker industry as well as many of the star players. Apparently the booze flowed rather freely and trays of foo-foo finger food was passed around for the descriminating taste buds of the well heeled crowd. I, on the other hand, was drinking luke warm left over media room coffee and eating some stale trail mix left behind during the exodus for the Wynn. People occasionally remind me that I am just taking pictures since I tend to forget and consider myself a member of the regular party-going media.
