The fifth day of the main event began. It was dubbed Day 2a by tournament organizers as the first two flights of Day 1 combined. There were plenty of former WSOP champions in the field including Joe Hachem, Scotty Nguyen, Tom McEvoy, Huck Seed, and Berry Johnston.
The Buzz
The first flight of Day 2 started with 1,034 players. By dinner, almost half the field had been eliminated. The pace was fast with dealer's shouting, "All in and a call!" every few minutes. TD Jack Effel had to make a decision to end the night early. When Day 2a ended right around Midnight, 350 players remained. They will return for Day 3 on Thursday.
The Backstory
The mood in the Amazon Ballroom got more serious as the intensity level among the players and media increased drastically. As more and more tables started to break, the players dug in deep. They knew that surviving the day would get them one step closer to cashing and making the money.
Sight of the Day
The empty tables. By dinner time, half of the Amazon Ballroom was filled with more empty tables. The action went so fast that the tables broke quicker than anticipated.
Quote of the Day
"Am I the chipleader?" director Todd Phillips asked about mid-way through the second level. The director of films such as Old School and Bittersweet Motel went on a rush and became one of the first players past the 300K mark.
Celebrity Players
Tobey Maguire, The Simpsons producer Sam Simon, Brad Garrett, Deanna Dozier, Todd Phillips, and Montel Williams were among the celebrities who advanced to Day 2.
Noteworthy Stacks
Kenny Tran and Todd Phillips jumped past 400K after the dinner break. David The Dragon Pham lurked around for a while among the chipleaders. Jeff "The Rain" Banghart and Jon Moonves were the first players past the 500K barrier.
