NBC Heads-Up Success Proves Poker Popularity

photos by flipchip • lasvegasvegas.com
NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship
Jerry Yang, Winner 2007 WSOP World Championship, playing at the 2008 Heads-Up

NBC's National Heads-Up Poker Championship series continues to pull bigger numbers than last year, a very good sign for the poker industry. Of course, viewers are watching the best poker show on TV. A cast of A-list poker pros, sports figures and celebrities combined in a single elimination format modeled after college basketball has proven to be a winning combination. Now, bring in a sports entertainment giant, NBC, to produce the shows and viewers are assured of top quality poker.

More good news for poker? Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) and Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) have teamed up to introduce legislation that would remove the stigma cast on Internet poker by the Port Security Bill (Frist Folly). The Frist legislation (UIEGA) was to be enforced by the banking industry thru a credit/debit card transaction filter "thingy" with the ability to discern right from wrong and cancel all illegal transactions. Moving money to your Internet Race Book, that's legal and right, keep betting. Moving money into your player account located in the cage of an Internet poker room, that's illegal and wrong, stop, go directly to jail, don't pass go.

The banking industry, after a year of seeking a solution to this mandate (remember, these are the very same people that have to solve the sub-prime mortgage debacle), sent a letter to all members of Congress declaring the bill to be impossible to enforce. Barney Frank's bill will instruct the banking industry to ignore UIEGA. Mission accomplished.

What a strange, convoluted world we live in. The 9/11 inspired Port Security bill gets harpooned by the Frist anti-poker UIEGA bill, something conceived in such hast it contained an overlooked fatal flaw, it is impossible to enforce. Now we need new legislation that says, "Never Mind." In the future we really should give our full attention when deciding which people we will grant the honor of leadership and the right to serve our collective trust. Click here for a list of supporters for the Barney Frank bill. Check for your politician on the list and what to do if they are not there.

1970s WSOP Bracelet Winners

photos by flipchip • lasvegasvegas.com
Doyle Brunson
Doyle Brunson with WSOP bracelet #10

As we race towards the end of the first decade of the 21st century, we often forget about poker's humble origins, particularly in Las Vegas a city that implodes the old and rebuilds the new.

The WSOP has come a long way since the first year when the players voted on best all around player. Johnny Moss got the nod in 1970 and since then, a freezeout style tournament has determined the bracelet winners.

I recently took a peek at the list of early bracelet winners. The early 1970s was dominated by the legends... Johnny Moss, Puggy Pearson, Sailor Roberts, Jack Strauss, Bill Boyd.

photos by flipchip • lasvegasvegas.com
Puggy Pearson
Puggy Pearson (left), poker legend

1973 was the Year of Puggy as he took down three bracelets out of six total WSOP events played that year. Puggy won the Main Event, the $1K NL event, and $4K Seven-card Stud. Granted one of those was the equivalent of a two-table SNG, but those were some tough players. They also had two $3K buy-in Deuce to Seven events that year.

The later-half of the 1970s was dominated by Doyle Brunson, Bobby Baldwin, and Gary Berland. They combined for thirteen bracelets including three world championships. Berland picked up five bracelets in a three year stretch and Brunson collected six from 1976-79.

Check out the list of 1970s bracelet winner's after the jump...

Wendeen H. Eolis Settles WPT Dust-Up

photos by flipchip • lasvegasvegas.com
Wendeen H. Eolis
Wendeen H. Eolis, World Poker Association Chairman, playing the 2007 WSOP

Imagine holding a championship poker event at a major Las Vegas casino and nobody came to play. It wasn't quite that bad last week when the World Poker Tour (WPT) held the 2008 Ladies Championship at the Bellagio resort in Las Vegas; but, the 150 players in the events did not include some of the world's best known lady poker players.

photos by flipchip • lasvegasvegas.com
Susie Isaacs
Susie Isaacs, two time WSOP bracelet winner, playing the 2007 WSOP

Led by two time WSOP champion Susie Isaacs, a group of female players cancelled their entry in the event after learning the WPT would be substracting 15% from the prize pool as a mandatory donation to event partner, Susan G. Koman for the Cure. The players indicated they were not opposed to the charity and have supported its goals through donations of cash and time; but, a "mandatory donation," without regard for the player's financial circumstances was unacceptable.

Enter the World Poker Association's Chairman, Wendeen H. Eolis, to settle the matter and smooth the feathers of those involved in the controversy. Eolis explains, "The furor has centered on the WPT's insensitivity to the varying financial means of 'working players' and more broadly on the decision to compel a charitable donation in an event labeled as a championship." In typical Wendeen H. Eolis fashion, she skips the minions and goes right to the top, to Lyle Berman, Chairman of the Board of World Poker Tour Enterprises.

photos by flipchip • lasvegasvegas.com
Lyle Berman
Lyle Berman, Chairman of the Board of World Poker Tour Enterprises

Following their dialogue, Mr. Berman issued the following statement, ""The WPT has re-evaluated its decision to make a charitable donation a condition for participation in the WPT Ladies Championship." He added, "In the future there will be no such requirement in a WPT championship event." As an added bonus, Eolis signed up Berman as a professional member of the WPA.

Congratulations to super negotiator, Wendeen H. Eolis for bringing this to a quick solution. Congratulations to Lyle Berman for taking the high road and retracting the mandatory requirement and a final congrats to Susie Isaacs and associates for having the fortitude to stand by their principles and demand the righting of a wrong.

The Nines: Your Mind is Really in Vegas

Is it bigger than it used to be?
Is it bigger than it used to be?

I've been traveling for work recently. Unfortunately, none of that travel has taken me to Las Vegas. I was sent in the other direction to Germany and France. While there, I was struck by the differences between the old countries and the United States. I think Europe could use a little more 'Vegas', but there are similarities, and that led to this Top nine list:

9 Ways to Know That When Your Body is in Europe, Your Mind is Really in Vegas

9) Riding on the Autobahn @ 200 kph reminds you of your last cab ride down The Strip.
8) A museum volunteer tries to hand you a pamphlet and your first thought is that it's porn and you ignore her.
7) You think the really old buildings could be imploded to make way for bigger, newer buildings.
6) The cabbies and convenience store clerks don't speak English, just like in Vegas.
5) The Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe are bigger than you remember, but you've never been to this Paris before.
4) It occurs to you that the phrase "English only at the table" is probably not appropriate.
3) You'd sure like to find a $4.99 prime rib special. Heck, you'd like to find a $4.99 sandwich.
2) The fine marble of St. Mark's in Venice reminds you of the fine marble in the restrooms at the Venetian.
1) You choke up a little at the sight of neon.

Good Luck and Happy Trails,

Special K

Bodog poker's Evelyn Ng takes on Two Bodog Online Players

photos by flipchip • lasvegasvegas.com
Evelyn Ng
Bodog's Evelyn Ng playing at the 2007 WSOP

Bodog's Tournament Leader Board heads-up matches took place in the Bodog Poker room with Bodog pro Evelyn Ng going up against two online poker players who were the winner's of their respective weeks.

First was the winner for the week of April 6, "vinnyb9." There was a $3,000 cash prize up for grabs that had rolled over from other player's failed attempt to take out a Bodog pro. This time, though, "vinnyb9″ succeeded and walked away with some hard-earned prize money.

Next up was Bodog regular Johnathan "UFPokerStar" Westra. Unfortunatly for him he had to go against Evelyn Ng after her loss to "vinnb9″ and she got her revenge, sending him home with zero dollars to show for winning the week of April 13. However he qualified for the $12,000 2008 WSOP Main Event prize package, so he has that to look forward to.

Think you could take on the Bodog Poker pros? Work your way up the Bodog weekly tournament leader board and get a shot at one of them and the cash that goes with the glory.. And if you want to be a part of Team Bodog at the 2008 WSOP, check out the 2008 WSOP online poker qualifiers.

Brandi Hawbaker Suicide

photos by flipchip • lasvegasvegas.com
Brandi Hawbaker
Brandi Hawbaker playing at the 2007 WSOP

According to our friends at NeverWinPoker, Brandi Hawbaker committed suicide on Sunday. Here's the statement from Micon:

"Brandi Hawbaker to some, Naami Dea to others, took her own life on Sunday. This news has been confirmed through Brandon and Brandi's family. Brandon, Brandi's family, and friends have asked the poker world to respect their privacy while they grieve. When the time is right we will have Brandon's statement on NWP..."

Stay tuned for more information as this story develops.

To bring you up to speed, Brandi Hawbaker took the poker world like a category five hurricane when she was involved in the "Capt. Tom's Penis" debacle. Most recently, her former boyfriend posted a thread on 2+2 detailing their sordid relationship. Since then, rumors floated around that Brandi had left Las Vegas and relocated to Southern California where she converted to Islam and changed her name. She was reportedly seen playing cash games in L.A. based casinos.

Stud at the 2008 WSOP

photos by flipchip • lasvegasvegas.com
Seven Card Stud World Championship
2007 WSOP $5K Seven Card Stud World Championship final table

When I first starting playing poker in a casino environment, Seven Card Stud was the game. That was when the riverboat casinos first opened in Biloxi, MS in the early 1990s. I also played a decent amount of low-limit Stud in Atlantic City in the years prior to Rounders popularizing Texas Hold'em.

I wish there were more opportunities to play Stud at the 2008 WSOP, but sadly there are only four pure events (and two of those are 8 or better) and six Stud-centric events including the only Razz event and Event #10 is a mixed tournament consisting of half Omaha 8 and half Stud 8.

Here's the schedule of Stud events at the 2008 WSOP:

Event #10 Thursday, June 5, 2008 5:00 PM
$2,500 Omaha 8/b and Stud 8/b

Event # 14 Saturday, June 7, 2008 5:00 PM
$10,000 World Championship Seven Card Stud

Event # 26 Friday, June 13, 2008 5:00 PM
$1,500 Razz

Event #33 Tuesday, June 17, 2008 5:00 PM
$5,000 World Championship Seven Card Stud 8/b

Event #35 Wednesday, June 18, 2008 5:00 PM
$1,500 Seven Card Stud

Event #47 Thursday, June 26, 2008 5:00 PM
$1,500 Seven Card Stud 8/b

Of course, I did not include the three HORSE events at the 2008 WSOP. You get to play Stud or Stud 8 in 40% of the games. With the exception of a hundred or so people on the planet, the $50K HORSE Championship might not fit into your budget. However, there's a couple of lower buy-in HORSE events that seem appealing...

Event # 22 Wednesday, June 11, 2008 5:00 PM
$3,000 H.O.R.S.E.

Event # 45 Wednesday, June 25, 2008 5:00 PM
$50,000 World Championship H.O.R.S.E.

Event # 51 Sunday, June 29, 2008 5:00 PM
$1,500 H.O.R.S.E.

And then there's the Mixed Game Championship on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 5:00 PM. It's a new this year and has a $10,000 buy-in. It's listed as Event #8 on the WSOP schedule. It has some Razz, Stud, and Stud 8 play in there.

According to BJ Nemeth...

The World Championship Mixed Event is a mix of several different poker games, like H.O.R.S.E., but without a cool name. Event #8 is much more confusing than H.O.R.S.E, however.

In Event #8, there are three different types of levels, and within each level, the game switches every eight hands. (One pass of the button, for games with a button.) Levels last 60 minutes.

LEVEL A
Deuce-to-Seven Triple Draw
Limit Hold'em
Limit Omaha Eight or Better

LEVEL B
Razz
Seven Card Stud
Seven Card Stud Eight or Better

LEVEL C
No-Limit Hold'em
Pot-Limit Omaha

For the first hour of play, you're playing deuce-to-seven triple draw, limit hold'em, and Omaha eight or better, switching every eight hands. The second hour of play, you're playing razz, seven card stud, and seven card stud eight or better, switching every eight hands. The third hour of play, you're playing no-limit hold'em and pot-limit Omaha, switching every eight hands.

Here's a direct link to the structure sheet.

Venetian poker room is the place to be April 4 - 25 if you're looking for one of the most popular poker tournament series in Las Vegas. The 2008 Deep Stack Extravaganza II (DSE II) is the original poker tournament providing lower limit tournament players the same conditions featured in major money tournaments. More starting chips and longer playing times make the events more of a contest of skill and less of a crap shoot.

All daily events in the Deep Stack Ex II have identical conditions with a $330 buy-in for $4,500 in starting chips. Another $10 for the staff will add $1,500 to your stack for a total of $6,000 in play money. Playing levels have been expanded to 40 minutes, double the time for other comparable tournaments. All events begin at 6 PM with player registration opening 2 hours earlier at 4 PM. Satellites go daily for event entry.

Players in any event receive a $10 food credit, poker room rates and there's guaranteed valet parking for all poker players. Tell the valet you're there to play poker. Complete up to date information and tournament details are available by calling the Venetian poker room at 702.414.7657.

The Deep Stack Extravaganza series has become a magnet for poker players making for larger fields and bigger prize pools. Fact: The 2008 DSE I held in February attracted more than 6,700 players and paid out over $3.5 million in prize money.

Legal US Internet Poker a Distant Mirage?

Rep. Barney Frank
Rep. Barney Frank

This month marks the one year anniversary of Rep. Barney Frank's Internet Gaming Regulation and Enforcement Act of 2007. This time last year I was paying homage to this campaign for removal of the Port Security Bill's ban of Americans' rights to play poker in the world's great Internet poker rooms. Now, a year later, I realize the deck is stacked heavily against us. When a professional politician as powerful as Rep. Barney Frank, D-MA, doesn't have the horsepower to nudge his Internet poker relief bill out of the starting blocks what's our chance of success? How long are the odds for any of us ordinary poker players doing anything - solo, collectively or otherwise - to return this freedom to the US poker players? Slim to none.

How come a collection of rich, powerful, and well connected professional politicians can't undo, given a whole year, what just one of their unscrupulous brethren accomplished in minutes? If it was so easy for then Senate Majority Leader Frist to attach his Internet poker torpedo to the Port Security Bill; then what's preventing the equally powerful Frist successor from returning this missing freedom using the same proven technique of eleventh hour must-pass bill riders? Two Words...Harry Reid (D-NV). Nuff said?

A whole year has passed and there's not even been an agreement to start a "year long study" of Internet poker before proceeding to pass any legislation overturning the Frist Internet poker death warrant. Next April will I be posting the same old Internet Poker story of "no demonstrated progress" for the second straight year? The smart money is saying I will do exactly that.

Team Bodog's David Williams won last weeks Poker After Dark 'Jam Up' tournament. Poker After Dark is the very successful televised series structured as a week-long No Limit Texas Hold 'em mini-tournament for six top poker professionals.

David, who won his first WSOP bracelet in 2006, was up against some hard hitters: Howard Lederer, Mike Matusow, Antonio Esfandiari, Eli Elezra, and Barry Greenstein. The final hand saw Esfandiari all-in with A-5 against Williams' pocket 7s. The 7s held and Williams won the $140,000 prize pool.
