Huck Seed, 2009 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Champion

Well known poker professional Huck Seed took the lead in the best of three final table matches and never looked back. Using a strategy that collected numerous small pots he quickly established himself as the chip leader.

Following the same rather bland play in the second match Seed continued to hack away at Venessa Rousso's chips until he again pulled out to a lead and held on until the final showdown when his pair of Kings overpowered Rousso's pair of Tens.

Huckleberry Seed collected $500,000 for the win and a year's worth of bragging rights as the champion of one of poker's most prestigious events. Congratulations to Huck Seed for his latest poker accomplishment, champion of the 2009 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship. Vanessa Rousso collected $250,000 as first runner-up.

Tune into NBC TV's Sunday morning series of all the matches beginning in April. Check local listing for dates and times in your area.

Goodlatte/Leach Legislation To Ban Online Gambling & Poker Easily Passes US House

Goodlatte and Leach anti-gambling bill easily passes US House of Represenatives.

317 yeas to 93 nays.

The US House of Representatives passed legislation, 317 to 93, to stop online gambling including Internet poker rooms. Represenatives' Goodlatte and Leach merged similar anti-online gambling bills that will make it illegal to fund player accounts with credit cards, bank transfers or any other standard accepted practices. The legislation now heads to the Senate for a vote. If the legislation becomes law then the online poker industry will suffer a direct hit when the millions of US online poker players and their money are removed from the market. But passage will create a whole new set of problems; namely, how will the US enforce this law? No matter, the law will have a dire effect on the Internet gaming industry.

Online gambling sites' stock took a tumble when the negative news was announced. The online gambling sites' stocks have already taken a hit based on last week's rumors out of Washingto that the legislation would likely pass. The vote today was overwhelming to stop online gambling in the US. Industry insiders are speculating that this is the beginning of the end for poker's recent surge in popularity. Of course, online poker will remain legal almost everywhere else in the world. Europe gives their citizens the freedom to define the forced moral issues of online gaming while the United States dictates the politian's definition of evil. Something ironic about getting moral advice from a professional politician.

The Poker Prof was expressing his concerns back in 2004 when he posted this article on the legalities of online poker.

Poker Blogging, Free Stuff plus the Nines

The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace.
The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace.

I've become accustom to receiving and filling requests for photos of poker tournaments, players, Las Vegas, whatever...providing I have the time. I locate, prepare and send off many of these requests at no charge to the user. They go out under our Creative Commons License requiring only the inclusion of our predetermined credit line and remaining within the rules of the CC license agreement. Basically, this means I don't sell the images, but do provide them to the community at large based on need and usually without fees. Often I give away 8x10 prints to total strangers for nothing more than the good will it generates for the poker media community as a whole.

I've received some criticism that my "photo business model" precludes making a profit, often costing money. But, isn't sharing one of the prime elements of being a blogger? Isn't that what we do, share our opinions, knowledge, emotions, experiences, sometimes baring our soul and anything else we deem may have value to someone. As a niche community we have taken on the appearance of some of the current groups that have ancient beginnings, starting out as a loosely organized community of people with similar interests. Through networking (read linking) and interacting, the needs of peers are filled from within, we generally work at sharing ourselves and sometimes our resources.

The Poker Prof has been researching and writing a White Paper that will attempt to define and organize the contemporary poker blogging community. What originally began as a rather modest effort to categorize poker blogging has become a major task with considerable research, collating, editing and updating of material from a community that is best described as fluid. A constant state of flux that redefines and rebuilds the collective. That's one of the things I like best about blogging. I have a voice that can influence the architecture for the future.

Las Vegas is a great spot for photographers like this Rockwell scene at the Mirage Resort.

We are the pioneers of this virtual world, boldly moving into the unexplored regions, staking our claims for a piece of this digital real estate. Applying good business acumens, forging alliances, acquiring contributing partners and all the while never forgetting that this is a new world with new rules, a world that produces people whom are rich, well connected and powerful. This new virtual world has already produced the richest individual in the world and many more that are true movers and shakers in the real world, so decide what you want to be and go get it. I don't think there's ever been so much opportunity available for the taking. A digital version of the old land rush days when this country was becoming settled. The Prof hopes to have the paper completed soon.

Now you know why I usually give away photos for a link, a link that's really a sign pointing the way to my piece of this new world. I've included some photos of real world Las Vegas businesses that don't give away anything.

Fremont Street Experience puts on a patriotic look.

Now for something a little different. The recent trip to East Texas was an enlightening experience about life outside of Vegas. I've forgotten about the inconvenience of having restaurants close at dark and driving without any visible landmarks to use as navigation aids and being greeted like a long lost relative by total strangers in line at the grocery store. Mention you live in Las Vegas and you're an instant friend.

East Texans are passionate about politics and don't mind sharing an opinion or two about the country and the world in general. From my very un-scientific opinion poll they believe the country is in worse shape than at any time in their lives and they also believe America's image has suffered irreparable harm. They don't appear to drive as many foreign vehicles as I am accustom to seeing in Las Vegas, instead, preferring full size American made iron. There are also certain things everyone in East Texas knows so I've made a list of these facts. This weeks Nines List...

Top Nines List.

Top nine things every East Texan knows for a fact.

9. Every destination has a shortcut that includes a section of dirt road.

8. Never ask a group for driving directions. They will argue among themselves for a half hour about the best way to get to a place that is four blocks straight down the road.

7. People from New York talk real funny.

6. Texas Hold'em is a card game that's somehow about Texas.

5. Vegetarians are people that eat bacon instead of meat.

4. Speed Limit signs are only suggestions.

3. Dr. Pepper outsells Coke because it just 'flat' tastes better.

2. The best poker player in the world is a guy that looks like Jesse James and calls himself Jesus.

1. Armadillos are born dead alongside the road.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway + the Nines

The Las Vegas Hilton offers a full selection of wagers and prop bets for the NASCAR weekend events.
The Las Vegas Hilton offers a full selection of wagers and prop bets for the NASCAR weekend events.

The national television audience may get to see the NASCAR racer guys going around in circles at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway against a backdrop of snow on the mountains and low hills surrounding the town. The temperatures are the coldest of the winter, sixteen degrees below normal on Thursday. Low clouds, temperatures in the forties, wind chill in the Artic and some very rare snowflakes in some areas of town. Just the ticket to make the NASCAR fans feel at home while here in Las Vegas.

The stock car racing fans crowding into Las Vegas for one of NASCAR's major events are most welcome by the city because they leave pots of dough behind. A good natured crowd for the most part, people traveling the NASCAR circuit having fun while following their sport's speeding Heros, people with higher than average disposable income, people that are custom made for Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway is scheduled to undergo major renovation making it the show place of the NASCAR circuit. That's how Vegas does things for the guests, give them the most palatial experience to be found anywhere...Vegas resorts, casinos, shopping malls, even a NASCAR race track. I love it when the racers are here and think maybe we should go above and beyond to make our visitors as comfortable as possible. I've compiled a list of things we can do for the race crowd. This week's Nines...

Top Nines List.

Top Nine things Las Vegas can do to welcome the NASCAR race fans.

9. Cocktails made with real high octane gasoline.

8. Slot club sign-up bonus, a free Nomex driving suit.

7. Taxi cabs must drive 75 mph during race week (idea rejected when taxi drivers claimed they can't make a living slowing down to 75 for a whole week).

6. Add meat to the $10 hot dogs.

5. Replace soda machines with beer machines.

4. Free box of Tide detergent to the first 175,000 race fans to arrive in Las Vegas.

3. All food grilled over the open flames of burning chunks of rubber.

2. Metro Police give free food comps with all speeding tickets.

1. Motorhome races!

Wynn Loss Announced + the Nines

Bobbie Baldwin playing in the 2004 WSOP main Event.
The 1978 WSOP Champion, Bobby Baldwin, and Donna, his wife of the last thirteen years announced they have decided to chop up the pot and go their separate ways. Bobby is the former CEO of Mirage Resorts, and now, he is the executive in charge of the most expensive building project ever undertaken by the private sector, MGM Mirage's $7 billion CityCenter. Donna is a former model and was Miss Nevada 1984. She has appeared on numerous national magazine covers and commercials.
The Wynn Resort on the las Vegas Strip.
The Wynn Resort on the las Vegas Strip.

Steve Wynn announced on Thursday that Wynn Resorts Ltd. had a loss for the final quarter of just over $11 million and a just under $100 million loss for 2005. The first 8 months of operation for the Wynn Las Vegas Resort has some remarkable numbers, like averaging $274 per night for the 2,700 hotel rooms. Complete details for Chairman of teh Board Steve Wynn's Thursday conference call are available in the Friday edition of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

I find it amazing that the huge $2.7 billion Wynn Las Vegas managed to open without incurring major losses. The bugs were worked out before the crowd was let into this most expensive Las Vegas Resort. It cost a lot of money to start up such a huge machine for the first time. The place will continue to move forward and into the black under the skilled hand of Steve Wynn. The following list is things the Wynn could have done to hold down cost of opening and operating such a huge joint.

Top Nines List.

Top Nine things that could have been done differently to help reduce the operating cost of the Wynn Resort.

9. Instead of multi million dollar sign, yodeling old men in funny clothes on the mountain out front.

8. Cutting the size of the $110 hamburger without cutting the price.

7. Valet parking runs exotic car chop shop on the side.

6. No goofy shows with puppets.

5. Raise the price of quarter slot machines to 29 cents.

4. No hot water after 10 PM.

3. Swimming pools double as catfish farms.

2. Only food comp is a half off coupon for the Circus Circus buffet.

1. Pay toilets!

Las Vegas MGM Mirage CityCenter At $7 Billion + the Nines

The Boyd Gaming Group's Stardust is doing its last year before destruction.
The Boyd Gaming Group's Stardust is doing its last year before destruction.

MGM Mirage announced on Thursday that the cost for the CityCenter project slated for the Las Vegas strip was being revised upwards from the understated $5 billion. Apparently the original $5 billion estimate of construction cost missed the mark by about $2 billion. The latest projected cost for the biggest ever privately funded development in history is now $7 billion.

MGM Mirage President Jim Murren said the increased construction costs are a result of adding a high end 4,000 room luxury hotel, expanded residential space, a monorail transport system and higher levels of construction quality. Some of the additional costs were added to the project as a result of the unforeseen rapidly rising price of materials and labor.

Another Harrah's property headed for extinction is the Imperial Palace.
Another Harrah's property headed for extinction is the Imperial Palace.

The lead architecture firm for the CityCenter project is the Amsterdam based Gensler firm. The general contractor responsible for construction will be handled by Perini Corp, a familiar face in Las Vegas gaming mega-projects. The project is scheduled to begin construction this summer and continue for three years until the projected 2009 completion date.

The debut of the CityCenter project has spawned another destination city-within-a-city project on the Vegas strip. The owners of the Stardust Hotel and Casino, Boyd Corp., announced plans to raze the property to make way for the Echelon, another multi-billion resort. The largest casino owner in the world, Harrah's Entertainment, is mum on any future plans for a mega-resort, but they have been methodically buying up properties fronting the east side of the Las Vegas strip including prime corners in the heart of strip at the Flamingo intersection. Rumors persist that Harrah's will acquire the small Barbary Coast located at Flamingo, the final piece in an uninterrupted stretch of strip frontage. Harrah's already owns Caesars Palace located opposite on the west side of the strip.

The 'co-ordinate your shirt with the landscaping' contest at the Fremont Experience.

Las Vegas project cost are now at levels approaching government budgets. With the MGM Mirage CityCenter project getting an infusion of another $2 billion, the project continues to push the limits. Add a billion here and a billion there and it will soon become serious money. I given some thought to what you can do with a couple of billion dollars here in Las Vegas. This weeks Nines...

Top Nines List.

Top Nine things you can do in Las Vegas with $2 billion dollars.

9. Buy a little over half of the Wynn Las Vegas.

8. Solve the problem of Las Vegas' congested traffic with large military tanks.

7. Pay Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman's annual gin bill...once.

6. Buy downtown Las Vegas, then use the $1.999 billion left over to
attach rockets to the Fremont Experience and send it to the moon.

5. Buy the Las Vegas city council for almost a whole year.

4. Take your entire extended family to dinner at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.

3. Buy a vacant lot next door to Celine Dion's house.

2. Play slot machines for a long time before going broke.

1. Play heads-up poker with Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth simutaneously!

I received an e-mail with a 'Top Nine List' from my friend and fellow poker tournament photographer (and he regulary photographs the richest guy in the world) and blogger, Curtis Krumel. Curtis came to Las Vegas for the Bellagio's Festa al Lago Poker Touranment last October. With pen and pad and a professional digital camera, Curtis artfully documented all of the action of the event while working with Dr Pauly and me (He also covered for me to take some much needed time off). He provided all of his notes and photos to the Prof's blog and we are most grateful. Curtis spent a long stretch of time in Las Vegas before returning to his home and work in Charlotte, North Carolina. Recently he sent a Top Nine List of ways to know you spent too much time in Las Vegas. Thanks again for everything and the Nines list. This week's Nines List...

Top Nines List.

Top nine ways you know you spent too long in Vegas after returning to work.

8. You catch yourself scanning the cafeteria for hookers.

7. It's 5:30 and you wonder why everybody is going home.

6. You are disappointed that you can't get shrimp or crab legs at the 'buffet'.

5. The only Elvis impersonator is Pilipino and there is only ONE.

4. Boss is real tired of poker references in business meetings ("We need to go all-in to make this deal.").

3. You are surprised to wake up refreshed.

2. You hang out in front of the office waiting for the valet.

1. Oh, so THAT'S the sun!
