Pacific Sun

Phone: 702.369.4084 (Fashion Show Mall), 702.433.0003 (Galleria at Sunset)

Address:

3200 Las Vegas Blvd. So. Las Vegas, NV 89109--Fashion Show Mall
1300 West Sunset Rd. Henderson, NV 89014--Galleria at Sunset

From the Pac Sun website:

It all started as a little surf shop in 1980 in Newport Beach, California. It wasn't called Pacific Sunwear then. It wasn't even all that different from all the other shops carrying surfboards and wax, except for one thing, the founders had a better idea. You see, during Southern California's wet, cool winters, the beaches get empty and the surf store business goes dry. Where does everyone go? To the mall of course. That was the idea: to be the first surf shop to move into California's popular mall locations.

The first mall opening was in 1981 in Santa Monica Place. It was huge. Soon we opened seven more mall stores up and down the coast in places like Torrance, Thousand Oaks and West Los Angeles. By 1987 we had grown to 21 stores.

But PacSun wasn't the only good idea born at the beach in the early '80s. All over Orange County, California, locals were creating their own brands of clothing with names like Gotcha, CatchIt and Quiksilver. One day a guy walked into the PacSun store with a carton of super-long board shorts and the kids grabbed them before we could get them out of the box. The brand? Billabong. We all grew up together. In '89 we expanded outside of California for the first time. We opened up shops on the East Coast and ran into some snags. Surf brands were mainly shorts and t-shirts and the East Coast was mainly cold. But we caught on quick and so did our vendors. Our surf and skate brands moved into long pants and sleeves, and sales began to climb. Pants and T-shirts got bigger and so did PacSun. Skate brands like Gypsys & Thieves and Vision came along in 1990. Fresh Jive brought out baggy jeans and PacSun caught the trend. We introduced private brands like Island Force, Diversion and Shotts to help fill in the line. Stussy hit the beach in '92 and the kids couldn't buy it fast enough. We were at 60 stores when we went public in '93.

It's a blur after that. We introduced juniors and shoes, expanded the store size, opened our first outlet store, opened our first non-mall store in Greenwich Village, New York, and just kept growing. From one surf shop to over 859 Pacific Sunwear stores and 76 Pacific Sunwear outlet stores in 50 states and Puerto Rico.

How does PacSun succeed when thousands of other clothing companies fail? We listen; and we change. Someone once said to the CEO of PacSun, "You give too much credit to those kids." But everyone at PacSun knows the kids have the answers. We listen to get the trends, the solutions and find out what we're doing right. The rest, of course, is history.

3200 Las Vegas Blvd. So. Las Vegas, NV 89109--Fashion Show Mall
1300 West Sunset Rd. Henderson, NV 89014--Galleria at Sunset

From Hot Topic:

In the fall of 1989, Hot Topic opened its doors in Westminster, California. We'd love to tell you it was a huge success, with hundreds of teens clawing their way into the store, but we'd be lying. Sales were disappointing. Some days we barely made a hundred bucks. Was founder Orv Madden's vision doomed? It was time to take a step back and re-evaluate. First, our location in the mall wasn't the best. How the heck could we sell anything if nobody could find us? Then we looked at what was selling-costume jewelry. We started buying more stuff like cross necklaces, unisex earrings and leather bracelets and got rid of hair scrunchies, men's ties and dress socks. Hot Topic found a niche and its name was music-influenced accessories. Whether it was fingerless gloves like Billy Idol or glam metal bootstraps like Poison, music was definitely the driving force behind teen fashion. After our Westminster customers gave us a reality check, we packed our bags, moved to Montclair, California and rocked their mall with the first Hot Topic store to carry all music-influenced accessories for teens.

As business increased in 1990, adding apparel seemed like a no-brainer, and what better way than to add the ultimate music fan essential-rock tees. At the time, finding a rock tee wasn't easy. You had to buy 'em from catalogs, small record stores or at concerts. It was unheard of to see a rock tee at the mall, so imagine how our customers flipped when they were able to purchase Bauhaus, The Cure, TSOL and Depeche Mode T-shirts at Hot Topic. Not surprisingly, these 4 titles blew out, so more alternative bands were added. Within a year, we had about 50 different band titles, and rock-inspired clothing lines like Lip Service and Serious were a big chunk of the business. By the end of 1990, we had opened 3 more stores in California and by 1994, Hot Topic was 50% accessories and 50% apparel.

A recent series of acquisitions has created an "expansion explosion" and taken this Northwest favorite to national prominence. Though started in 1973, the real boom for Fred Meyer Jewelers began in 1995 when it acquired 23 jewelry stores operating under a variety of names in California and Washington. Rapidly following that acquisition came another of Merksamer Jewelers, adding 49 more stores and a national presence with locations from California to Maryland and Washington to Wisconsin.

Then in 1997, sudden growth struck again when 44 Fox's Jewelers in 6 Midwestern states were acquired. Most recently (October 1998) Fred Meyer Jewelers acquired Littman Jewelers, an East Coast chain with 123 stores. These acquisitions combined with continuous growth from opening new locations has helped Fred Meyer Jewelers quickly grow to over 410 jewelry outlets in 35 states under the banners of Fred Meyer Jewelers, Littman Jewelers and Barclay Jewelers.

During a time when many jewelry chains have shrunk or closed completely, Fred Meyer Jewelers has catapulted into a national leader in the fine jewelry business.

Zales Jewelers

Phone: 702.731.0103
Address: 3200 Las Vegas Blvd. So. Las Vegas, NV 89109

Notes: Located at the Fashion Show Mall

From Zales Corporate--

In the 1920s, Morris (M.B.) and William Zale had a vision: to provide customers with quality merchandise at the lowest possible price. This vision became a reality when the first Zales Jewelers store opened in Wichita Falls, Texas, on March 29, 1924.

With a credit plan of "a penny down and a dollar a week," the Zale brothers launched a marketing strategy considered to be revolutionary at the time, and thus made jewelry and other merchandise affordable to the average working American. Friendly customer service, liberal credit policies, and dedicated employees led to great success and expansion, with 12 stores in Oklahoma and Texas by 1941.

During World War II, Zales Jewelers responded to the limited production of consumer goods by maintaining its current prices on jewelry, limiting expenses, and looking for growth opportunities. These efforts were rewarded in 1944 with the acquisition of Corrigan's of Houston, Zales' first "carriage trade" (fine jewelry) store, whose purchase eventually launched the Bailey Banks & Biddle brand.

In 1946, Zales Jewelers moved its headquarters from Wichita Falls to Dallas. The corporate offices were housed in the Mercantile Bank Building, the first of several locations. The company continued to prosper and in 1952, a profit sharing plan was introduced to employees.

Zales Jewelers took major steps in 1957 to broaden its reach in the marketplace. The first shopping center location was opened, marking a major shift from its strategy of operating only downtown stores. The same year, Zales announced the initial public offering of its stock (ZLC) and then began trading its public shares on the American Stock Exchange the following year.

The 1960s were a decade of diversity. The 119-store chain began branching out into other markets - shoes, sporting goods, drug stores, furniture and catalogue stores. In fact, the shareholders decided to change the company name to Zale Corporation to reflect the diversity of the business.

The decade of the '70s brought continued expansion. Zale Corporation grew to more than 1,700 stores and posted a single-day sales record of $10 million.

In 1984, Zale Corporation unveiled its newest acquisition - the 890-carat "Incomparable Diamond," the largest internally flawless diamond in the world. The next year, Zale moved its world headquarters into a 430,000-square-foot complex in Irving, Texas, its current location.

The company's history was significantly altered with the 1986 leveraged buyout of Zale Corporation by Peoples Jewellers of Canada and Swarovski International of Austria. Expansion continued, however, with the purchase in 1989 of the Gordon's Jewelers chain of 469 stores.

The 1990s marked another critical turning point for the corporation when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1992. The following year, the company emerged from bankruptcy after restructuring its debt. Five years later, 1998 became the "breakaway year" for Zale with annual sales that topped $1.3 billion - up from $920 million in 1994 - and a 25 percent net earnings growth (excluding unusual items). During its tremendous turnaround year, the company showed profit in all four quarters for the first time since the reorganization. That same year, Zales Outlet was launched, giving the corporation 13 locations in premier outlet centers in the United States.

Expansion again became the primary growth strategy with two major acquisitions: Peoples Jewellers of Canada in 1999 and Piercing Pagoda, Inc. in 2000.

Today, Zale Corporation is over a $2.5 billion success story that evolved during a phenomenal growth period from 1994 through 2000, including an overall 93 percent increase in sales and 78 percent growth in average store sales. As a leading specialty retailer of fine jewelry, Zale now operates over 2,300 retail locations throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico under the following brand names: Zales Jewelers, Zales Outlet, Gordon's Jewelers, Bailey Banks & Biddle, Peoples Jewellers, Mappins Jewelers, Piercing Pagoda, Plumb Gold, and Silver & Gold Connection.

Whitehall Jewellers

Phone: 702.737.1174
Address: 3200 Las Vegas Blvd. So. Las Vegas, NV 89109

From Whitehall Jewelers--

In 1903, Hugo Marks and his family gathered up their few possessions and boarded a ship bound for the United States. From the moment this focused young 16 year old stepped foot on Ellis Island, he was determined to craft a successful future.

And craft he did. He found an opportunity on the bench at a jewelry trade shop in New York City, where his sharp eyes and agile hands made him a valued apprentice. Two years later, he took his well-honed skills and entrepreneurial spirit to Chicago, where his uncle Ben Roth owned a jewelry store on State Street, in the heart of Chicago's bustling commercial district.

Eventually, Hugo purchased this store and, along with his brother Al Marks, reopened it as Marks Bros. Jewelers. By 1946, the two brothers owned the largest jewelry franchise in Chicago's downtown market, with five State Street stores.

Hugo had found a concept that worked: Create a wonderful shopping experience for each and every customer. Hugo's three children took over the business in 1948. Before long, other stores followed in Detroit, San Francisco and even on Beverly Hills' famed Rodeo Drive. These stores were well-positioned in busy business districts, hotels and, beginning in the 1960s, in regional shopping malls.

By 1979, the company operated twelve stores under two brand names: Mark Bros. Jewelers and Whitehall Co. Jewelers. And it soon added a third brand when the company opened its first Lundstrom Jewelers store in Fort Myers, Florida.

Over the next two decades, the company was built into a premier national jewelry retailer with stores from coast to coast. Today, Whitehall Jewelers is a company whose fast growing network of small, attractive, upscale Whitehall and Lundstrom stores shine brightly in prime center court locations in the country's finest regional and super-regional malls. And in the spirit of Hugo Marks, the company's experienced sales consultants are more committed than ever to making each shopping experience an exceptional one.

The combined financial input of these great merchant families led to the purchase of a site between 49th and 50th Streets on upper Fifth Avenue, then jointly occupied by the Democratic Club and the Buckingham Hotel. With the opening of its founders' "dream store" on September 15, 1924, Saks Fifth Avenue became the first large retail operation to locate in what was then primarily a residential district. By offering the finest quality men's and women's fashions, as well as an extraordinary program of customer services, Saks Fifth Avenue has become the byword for taste and elegance.
