It all started as a little surf shop in 1980 in Newport Beach, California. It wasn't called Pacific Sunwear then. It wasn't even all that different from all the other shops carrying surfboards and wax, except for one thing, the founders had a better idea. You see, during Southern California's wet, cool winters, the beaches get empty and the surf store business goes dry. Where does everyone go? To the mall of course. That was the idea: to be the first surf shop to move into California's popular mall locations.

The first mall opening was in 1981 in Santa Monica Place. It was huge. Soon we opened seven more mall stores up and down the coast in places like Torrance, Thousand Oaks and West Los Angeles. By 1987 we had grown to 21 stores.

But PacSun wasn't the only good idea born at the beach in the early '80s. All over Orange County, California, locals were creating their own brands of clothing with names like Gotcha, CatchIt and Quiksilver. One day a guy walked into the PacSun store with a carton of super-long board shorts and the kids grabbed them before we could get them out of the box. The brand? Billabong. We all grew up together. In '89 we expanded outside of California for the first time. We opened up shops on the East Coast and ran into some snags. Surf brands were mainly shorts and t-shirts and the East Coast was mainly cold. But we caught on quick and so did our vendors. Our surf and skate brands moved into long pants and sleeves, and sales began to climb. Pants and T-shirts got bigger and so did PacSun. Skate brands like Gypsys & Thieves and Vision came along in 1990. Fresh Jive brought out baggy jeans and PacSun caught the trend. We introduced private brands like Island Force, Diversion and Shotts to help fill in the line. Stussy hit the beach in '92 and the kids couldn't buy it fast enough. We were at 60 stores when we went public in '93.

It's a blur after that. We introduced juniors and shoes, expanded the store size, opened our first outlet store, opened our first non-mall store in Greenwich Village, New York, and just kept growing. From one surf shop to over 859 Pacific Sunwear stores and 76 Pacific Sunwear outlet stores in 50 states and Puerto Rico.

How does PacSun succeed when thousands of other clothing companies fail? We listen; and we change. Someone once said to the CEO of PacSun, "You give too much credit to those kids." But everyone at PacSun knows the kids have the answers. We listen to get the trends, the solutions and find out what we're doing right. The rest, of course, is history.

In 1974 Scott Adams and Wayne Fox, two successful professional photographers, formed Kiddie Kandids. Their philosophy has always been Kiddie Kandids is a portrait studio first, and a business second. Sharing a deep passion for photography, the two founded Kiddie Kandids in Orem, Utah on the guiding principle of offering the highest quality children's portraits available for an affordable price. "We looked at the other studios at the time taking children's portraits and realized we could offer a higher quality product for less money, so we did," said Wayne Fox, co-founder. "As I look back at where we started and where we are now, it is almost an accident that we ended up here. Our only focus in opening Kiddie Kandids was to take the best children's portraits available to families. The expansion has happened as a secondary outcome of that goal. "It all started in a small kiosk in the mall," said Scott Adams, co-founder. "The kiosk was located right in the middle of the walkway and we would actually have large crowds gathered around watching the kids and cheering each smile. That is an experience Kiddie Kandids worked hard to create. We thought of the posing stand as a stage and the photographer as a performer. Even though we don't have the studio in the walkway of the mall anymore, that is still the atmosphere we strive to create today."

The year was 1948. Eighteen-year-old Dick Stack was an energetic salesman at a small Army and Navy store in Binghamton, New York. One day, the store owner asked Dick, an avid fisherman, if it would be a good idea to sell fishing gear in his shop. Dick offered to develop a plan.

After working tirelessly on a business plan over a succession of sleepless nights, Dick nervously approached the owner with his vision. The response was stinging. Dumbfounded, Dick was told that he didn't know what he was doing and "would never make a good merchant."

That evening, frustrated and dejected, Dick retreated to his grandmother's home. She listened quietly as he recounted his story. When he had finished, she rose silently and went to the kitchen. For more than 60 years, the Dairy Queen system's recipe for success has been simple. It's been a combination of hard-working people who own and operate restaurants and great-tasting food and tempting treats served in our establishments.

The founders of the Dairy Queen system were men and women who introduced a new kind of dessert treat and, in the process, developed the foundation of the franchising industry. The history of the Dairy Queen system is a story of a unique product that created an industry.

Our phenomenal story began with a 10 cent sale of a then unnamed product on August 4, 1938, in Kankakee, Illinois. A father and son in the mix plant business in Green River, Illinois, had been experimenting with a soft frozen dairy product for some time. They contacted Sherb Noble, a good friend and customer, who agreed to run the "all you can eat" trial sale at his walk-in ice cream store. Within two hours, he dished out more than 1,600 servings of the new dessert.

Back then, food franchising was all but unheard of, but the new product's potential made it a natural for such a system. When the United States entered World War II in December 1941, there were less than 10 Dairy Queen stores. However shortly after the war, the system took off at a pace virtually unrivaled before or since. With only 100 stores in 1947, it grew to 1,446 in 1950 and then to 2,600 in 1955. Today, the Dairy Queen system is one of the largest fast food systems in the world with more than 5,900 restaurants in the United States, Canada and 20 foreign countries.
