Sam’s Town will host the Heavyweight Championship of Poker during the first week of April, 2006.

The Heavyweight Championship of Poker (HPC) has found a home at Sam’s Town Hotel & Gambling Hall on the Boulder Strip in Las Vegas. Stanley R. Sludikoff, Editor & Publisher of Poker Player, officially announced the signing of the contract in the current issue of Poker Player (vol. 9 number 14 January 9, 2006). The tournament will be the highest buy-in poker event ever offered in a scheduled, open poker tournament. Entrants will have to pony up $100,000 to play in this tournament. The first HCP has been scheduled for April 5,6,7 and 8, 2006. Super satellites will be held on April 3rd and 4th. All of the action and final table will be filmed for later broadcast on national television.

The event will limit the entrants to 100 and approximately 40 seats will be available for direct buy-in while the remainder of entrants will win their way into the event from scheduled satellites held around the country. Many of the direct buy-in seats are already filled with professional poker players but some slots are available. Interested players can contact Stanley Sludikoff direct at 310.674.3365 (e-mail: srs@gamblingtimes.com) or contact Jerry Reed at 650.327.4810 (e-mail: jr105@sbcglobal.net). E-mail is the preferred method of contact as it will provide a time stamp of your contact for the limited seats. Casinos interested in staging satellites for this event should contact Stanley or Jerry direct.

The first annual Heavyweight Championship of Poker has been formatted along the lines of professional boxing and will require the champion, after the first three months of winning the title, to defend the HCP title once every thirty days in a heads-up contest against players that put-up the $1,120,000 challenge fee. The winner of a challenge match will take away the $2 million purse and the loser will receive a buy-in in the next annual HCP event. Another interesting note for this tournament will be those players winning their way into the championship event via a satellite will share 32% of their winnings, 5% will got to the casino that staged the satellite and 27% will be divided equally among the nine other players at the satellite’s final table. Additionally, satellite winners will be required to wear the logo of the sponsoring casino. Direct buy-in players can wear one logo of their choice. More details as they become available.

The tournament will be under the direction of veteran Poker Tournament Director, Dick Gatewood. Dick is the Manager of Poker operations at Sam’s Town and has many years in the poker industry. He brings a level of professional expertise commensurate with the status of this exciting event. The prize pool will be $10,000,000 with the winner receiving $5,000,000 of which $1,000,000 will be held in escrow for the heads-up challenge matches.
